CHINA - The Heilongjiang provincial government will officially launch a tourism project that allows visitors to experience exile in Ning'an County, Mudanjiang City, this coming December.
Organizers hope the innovative service will significantly boost tourist numbers and increase revenue, according to Jiupai News.
Historical documents all emphasize that Ningguta in Mudanjiang City, southeast of Heilongjiang Province, is an ancient military town and one of the most famous exile sites in China.
During the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), more than 1.5 million people were sent here for serious crimes.
With the "Suffering Tour" project, visitors can wear pink or blue prisoner costumes. To complete the look of a forced prisoner, props such as chains and wooden shackles will be provided.
The guards dressed in period costumes also provide a realistic, immersive environment, helping visitors feel the weight of the “role” they are experiencing.
Anyone who chooses this tour can also bungee jump to feel the despair of the exile. Jumping off cliffs is said to be the way prisoners in ancient times did in times of extreme desperation.
The cost and length of the “exile” experience have not been disclosed. The entrance fee to Jingpo Lake, where the new service is planned to be deployed, is 49 yuan (over 171,000 VND) per person.
The tour has attracted special attention on Chinese social media and is highly anticipated.
“I want to go to Ninh Co Thap this winter and walk the prison trail. It sounds very relaxing”; “This is a creative way to promote local history and culture, and also attract young people”,...
However, there are also many people who criticize this idea.
