Today (December 5), the Elysee Palace announced that French President Emmanuel Macron has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Michel Barnier, but asked him and his cabinet to continue working until a new government is chosen.

Reuters reported that Prime Minister Michel Barnier officially submitted his resignation today, December 5, one day after parliament voted no confidence in his government.

However, at the request of French President Emmanuel Macron, he and his ministers continued to assume the role of the interim government until a new administration was chosen.

On the same day, President Macron held an urgent meeting with allies and veteran politicians in an effort to quickly choose a new prime minister.

Le Parisien and several other French newspapers reported that Francois Bayrou, chairman of the Democratic Movement party, would have lunch with the French president. Mr Bayrou is a veteran politician and a close ally of Mr Macron.

French Prime Minister Michel Barnier has submitted his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron.

Outgoing Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu has also been mentioned as a potential candidate for prime minister, but there has been no word yet on whether he will meet with the president.

Reuters quoted three informed sources as saying that Mr. Macron plans to choose a replacement government as soon as possible, and if possible, before the celebration of the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral this weekend (December 7) after 5 years of restoration.

President Macron’s allies have also urged the leader to act quickly. After a snap election in June, it took Mr Macron nearly three months to appoint Mr Barnier as prime minister.

The French National Assembly on December 4 held a vote of no confidence submitted by the left. The reason was a conflict over the budget bill proposed by Mr. Barnier's government towards austerity for next year, according to AFP.

With significant support from the far-right, 331 out of 577 MPs voted no confidence in the government, triggering the removal of the prime minister and the entire cabinet.

Mr Barnier only took office in September after snap parliamentary elections in June left no party with a majority, while the far-right held enough votes to decide the survival of the government.
