On the morning of September 22 (New York time, the same day Vietnam time), General Secretary and President To Lam met with the Prime Minister of the Vatican, Cardinal Pietro Parolin. The meeting took place on the occasion of the Vietnamese Party and State leader's working visit to the US from September 21 to 24. At the meeting, the two sides highly appreciated the positive developments in the Vietnam - Vatican relationship, notably the Permanent Representative of the Holy See in Vietnam and the Permanent Representative Office in Hanoi which will come into operation in 2024. General Secretary and President To Lam thanked Pope Francis for visiting and encouraging the Vietnamese people to overcome the consequences of storm No. 3. The Party and State leader highly appreciated and cherished the good feelings of Pope Francis and Prime Minister, Cardinal Pietro Parolin for Vietnam. He also emphasized that in recent times, Vietnam has facilitated pastoral visits by the current Permanent Representative and the former Non-Resident Special Envoy. The General Secretary and President expressed his appreciation for the messages, instructions and letters sent by previous Popes and Pope Francis to the Vietnamese Catholic community. They emphasized the spirit of "a good Catholic is a good citizen", encouraging the Catholic Church in Vietnam to "contribute to national life, for the benefit of the entire nation in the spirit of dialogue and cooperation". Vatican Prime Minister, Cardinal Pietro Parolin recalled his good impressions of Vietnam during his previous visit. He affirmed that the Catholic Church in Vietnam always wishes to accompany the country's development in the spirit of sincerity, responsibility and trust. The two leaders said that maintaining the exchange of high-level delegations and the mechanism of meetings of the Vietnam - Vatican Joint Working Group play an important role in promoting mutual respect and understanding. Vatican Prime Minister, Cardinal Petro Parolin affirmed that the Permanent Representative of the Holy See actively cooperates with Vietnam. He also said that Pope Francis hopes to visit Vietnam soon, contributing to promoting the connection between the Holy See and the Catholic Church in Vietnam, further strengthening the Vietnam - Vatican relationship.
