Meritorious Artist Bui Nhu Lai is a famous stage director, he is also the Head of the Theater Department of Hanoi Theatre and Cinema School. However, after appearing in the movie Under the Shade of Happiness Tree , many audiences only remember him as a clumsy mechanic named To.

The male artist shared that he is not bothered about this, on the contrary he is happy because his point of view is to be satisfied with the present.

- After the character To received much love from the audience, what do you think if the public met you and called you by the name To?

I think that is also a normal reaction. In fact, the name Bui Nhu Lai was previously known only to a small group of people. Those were people who worked with me at the Theater or people interested in the performing arts.

Now in real life, the audience calls me To, I feel happy about that. Just like at this time, the audience pays attention to the movie, to my character, but later when other movies air, the audience pays attention to other characters, that is also completely normal.

- Currently, there is a reality that many artists have good expertise, but are not known to the audience as much as "superficial" stars. Even for you, many audiences are surprised because the person who plays the supporting role, To, is a Meritorious Artist, director, head of the drama troupe and Head of the Theater Department of the University of Theater and Cinema...

From my personal point of view, I completely sympathize and understand the audience's perspective. Because this is the audience of TV dramas, it is normal that they do not know me, but the audience of the stage will know who Bui Nhu Lai is and what plays director Bui Nhu Lai has made.

Some people also asked me if I felt offended that the TV audience didn't know about me. Honestly, I'm not offended at all, because that's the TV audience's perspective.

The level of promotion for a TV series is much wider than that of a stage production. No matter how famous a stage production is, it can only attract a maximum of 500-700 audiences depending on the theater, but when appearing on a TV series, millions of people see you.

Because the level of promotion is different, the audience's approach is also different. When you clearly define your role and the nature of your work, it is not a big deal whether one person knows you or another does not.

But to be honest, I don't want too many people to know. I really like being a director, just standing in the wings or sitting below to feel my work.

Being known by many people is of course good, but it also has its limitations. Each artist will have different goals, some people want to be known by many people, but for me that desire is not too great an aspiration.

"Each artist will have different goals" - To "Under the shade of the happy tree" shared.

- Nowadays, there are some amateur actors who succeed quickly and become famous much more easily than many well-trained actors. What do you think about this?

We have to consider whether that level of fame is on television or on stage. In addition, I think that the success of each artist is felt and evaluated by themselves. I think we should not judge the level of success of an artist by the frequency of their appearances on television.

When I returned to making TV dramas, many people also asked me if I felt deprived when I returned to making films after many years of absence. I didn't feel deprived at all!

Because I feel happy with the stage, with teaching, now returning to making TV dramas, I also feel happy. That means I am always satisfied with the roles I have.

Actors and artists who are formally trained have the right to choose Theater units to live with their passion for the stage. Because in the teaching process, I see that many students really like the role of a stage artist, while there are students who like television dramas.

And whether they act on stage or on television, there is always a certain audience that knows and loves them. Because any “amateur” actor or a well-trained actor, when becoming famous, needs a lucky factor that we jokingly call “being chosen by the profession”. So no matter what field they dedicate themselves to, that is still a success, because not everyone can live with their passion and talent.

And as I said, popularity is not a measure of success. And success is not a measure of happiness.

"Popularity is not a measure of success."

- You said that fame is not a criterion to evaluate the level of success. But fame will help artists earn a lot of money. So can the income of an artist be considered a criterion to evaluate success?

This is just each individual's perception, they see what is enough, what is a lot, how much is successful...

There are people who have hundreds of billions and still feel it is not enough, but there are people who feel that a few hundred million is a lot. There are artists who, in the eyes of the audience, are rich because they have luxury villas and many real estates, but they always feel uncomfortable because it is not enough.

But there are also artists who live in very small apartments but they are satisfied with doing the job they love and having time to drink coffee with friends in the morning.

Personally, I think each person's level of success depends on their own perception of what they have.

- Besides the trend of “amateur” actors, the Vietnamese entertainment industry is now also flourishing with “multi-talented” artists who can take on many roles. What do you think about this trend?

If we consider the artists following the “multi-talented” trend in Vietnamese showbiz today, I am quite impressed with Tran Thanh. When my wife played the recording of Tran Thanh singing, I said that with this voice, he could go on shows. In addition, Tran Thanh can also act in movies and be an MC.

Recently, there are many singers, models, and beauties participating in movies. Personally, I think that these “multi-talented” people are naturally gifted with artistic talent. In addition, they themselves also work very hard to achieve certain milestones on the path to conquering art.

It is this effort that makes them “open” their awareness to different art forms. Their success is the sum of many factors, from favorable time, favorable location, and favorable people.

Because there are thousands of people who wish to be like them, but successful people can be counted on the fingers of one hand. I believe that "versatile" artists, in addition to their terrible aspirations, must have many times more effort than normal, and that is what we need to acknowledge in them.
