Last year, the Japanese Cabinet added the automobile transportation industry to the list of industries that allow foreign workers to work in the country under the status of “Specified Worker No. 1.”
After the automobile transportation industry was added to the “Specified Skilled Worker No. 1” status, the first skills test was held in December 2023. Mr. Iyus (40 years old), an Indonesian, was the only person to pass the bus driving test.
Mr. Iyus, an employee of Nikko Sightseeing Bus, a subsidiary of Ryobi Group, has a Class 2 driver's license for large trucks and will start working as a professional bus driver from April 2025.
Speaking to reporters on February 5, Iyus said that becoming a professional bus driver in Japan was like a dream come true. He also promised to strive to drive safely and bring the best experience to passengers.
In March 2024, the Japanese Cabinet added four more sectors that allow foreign workers to work in Japan under the residence status of "Specified Skilled Worker No. 1", including automobile transportation, railways, forestry and wood processing.
Among them, truck, bus and taxi drivers are covered by the specific skills system of the automobile transport sector. In the first round of testing conducted late last year, Iyus was the only person who passed the bus driving test, while 45 others passed the truck driving test and one passed the taxi driving test.
The first foreigner to be allowed to drive a bus in Japan will open up many opportunities for foreign workers to contribute more actively to Japan's transportation industry, which is suffering from a severe shortage of human resources due to the aging population.
