Yan’s family received a ransom call demanding 1 million yuan ($137,800) earlier this month. Yan’s friend reported her to Thai police after she had not been in contact since June 30, when she planned to go to Phuket.

Thai police have identified Ma Qingyan, 32, a Chinese national as the suspect. Ma Qingyan left Thailand after Yan's body was found in an area surrounded by tall grass. Surveillance cameras last captured Yan with Ma Qingyan on July 1.

Ma Qingyan drove alone and burned a suitcase near a lake. Police suspect the suitcase was linked to Yan. Yan’s phone signal was last detected near a park about 70km from Bangkok on July 3.

Late last month, a Chinese national and a Chinese-American were kidnapped and murdered in the Philippines. The Chinese government has demanded that the Philippines find and severely punish the criminals.
