Steel prices on the exchange

Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for May 2025 delivery rose 43 yuan to 3,348 yuan/t.

Iron ore futures rebounded and hit their highest in nearly two weeks, supported by a weaker dollar and prospects of increased steel demand during the upcoming peak construction season in top consumer China.

The most-traded January iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) DCIOcv1 rose 3.45 percent to 750.5 yuan ($105.40) a tonne, hitting its highest since Aug. 13.

Benchmark September iron ore SZZFU4 on the Singapore Exchange rose 4.4% to $100.3 a tonne, also the highest since Aug. 13.

The dollar hovered near an eight-month low, after dovish comments from US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on Friday reinforced expectations of a September interest rate cut.

A weaker dollar makes commodities cheaper for buyers using other currencies.

“The prospect of monetary policy easing has boosted sentiment across the commodity complex,” ANZ analysts said in a note.

A slight improvement in fundamentals also supported prices of key steelmaking components, although more equipment maintenance by Chinese steelmakers following widening losses remained a headwind, analysts said.

Supply-side pressure has eased slightly with lower domestic output amid falling ore prices, while expectations of improved downstream steel demand next month have increased, analysts at Sinosteel Futures said in a note.

Sentiment was also boosted by news that China's central bank will stick to its accommodative monetary policy.

Other steelmaking components on the DCE posted gains, with coking coal DJMcv1 and coke DCJcv1 up 2.52% and 3.41%, respectively.

Steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange rose. Rebar SRBcv1 rose 2.64%, hot-rolled coil SHHCcv1 rose 2.72%, rebar SWRcv1 rose 1.42%, and stainless steel SHHScv1 rose 0.8%.

China began halting its steel capacity replacement program from August 23 while it revises measures, in a move expected to curb capacity expansion.
