US tariffs on steel and aluminum would affect millions of tons of imports, as the country relies on foreign supplies to meet demand for metals used in construction and the manufacture of vehicles, technology and military equipment.

In 2023, US steel consumption was estimated at 93 million tonnes, with net imports accounting for 13% of this demand. As for aluminium, the country consumed 4 million tonnes during the same period, with net imports accounting for 44% of the total. Meanwhile, Canada accounted for 56% of aluminium imports.

The US steel industry is now coming off a bad year in 2024, and steelmakers say the new import growth is hurting profits and output.

Trump has said that tariffs could help American companies increase domestic production. But at least for the steel industry, new capacity will not be built quickly, according to experts at Morgan Stanley.

The bank’s analysts believe it could take three years or more to build and commission new facilities, so any import tariffs on metals or mining products would likely result in higher domestic prices for domestic buyers.

The tariffs on aluminum and steel were among the first tariffs imposed during President Donald Trump's first term.

On February 1, the US President ordered an additional 25% tariff on goods imported from Mexico and Canada, and an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods. At the same time, the tariff on Canadian energy products will be 10% and will apply to the country's entire energy sector, including oil, gas and electricity. These tariffs will take effect on February 4.

In response, Canada announced retaliatory tariffs of 25% on up to $155 billion worth of US imports, including steel and aluminum products, in two phases. The government will also consider additional measures.

In response, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has instructed the Ministry of Economy to take a response that includes retaliatory tariffs and other measures to protect the country's interests. China's Ministry of Commerce has announced that it will file a complaint with the World Trade Organization over "the illegal practices of the United States" and will take measures to protect its rights and interests.

US steelmakers have increased imports of rolled metal products by 3.7% in 2024 compared to 2023, to 22.5 million tons. This is evidenced by data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Total steel imports (rolled and semi-finished products) increased by 2.5% year-on-year - to 28.86 million tons for the year.

The main sources of steel imports to the US in 2024 are Canada, Brazil and Mexico – 6.56 million tonnes, 4.49 million tonnes and 3.52 million tonnes, respectively.
