Swiss Defense Minister Viola Amherd will become the country's president from January 2024.

Current Defense Minister Viola Amherd will assume the presidency of Switzerland from January 2024, officially replacing Alain Berset in a role that rotates annually among members of the cabinet, the Swiss Federal Council.

The Federal Council consists of seven members serving four-year terms. As President Berset is no longer in government, the Swiss Parliament also voted to elect Beat Jans to the Federal Council to replace Berset.

Previously, Mr. Berset, 51 years old, was the youngest and longest-serving minister since joining the Federal Council in 2012. 2023 also marks Mr. Berset's second presidential term, after his first term in 2018.

The new Swiss Federal Council consists of seven members, each minister heading a ministry.

The current cabinet ministers were also reappointed and continued their four-year terms.

The Swiss constitution stipulates that the president has no more power than other members of the Federal Council and still heads his or her own ministry, so Ms Amherd will also be defence minister.

Traditionally, the presidency rotates among the members of the Federation Council in order of seniority. That means every member takes a turn as president for a one-year term.

And the President of Switzerland is not the head of state of the country either, as the entire Federal Council is considered the "collective head of state".
