Strolling on "Ha Long Bay on the mountain" - Hoa Binh hydroelectric lake (Hoa Binh province), we were not only "satisfied" with the majestic landscape of the mountains and rivers, but also explored and experienced the lives of households farming fish in cages (raising black carp, raising sturgeon) here.
No longer the fierce Da River with many rapids and waterfalls, an unruly horse like in the work "The Ferryman of the Da River" by writer Nguyen Tuan, now the Da River is gentle, calm, the green color of the water and the mountains blend together.
In particular, the development of cage fish farming has brought diners famous fish and shrimp products from the majestic river.
Strolling on "Ha Long Bay on the mountain", we were not only "satisfied" with the majestic landscape, but also explored and experienced the lives of households farming fish in cages here.
Currently, on Hoa Binh Lake, there are about 2 thousand households and a number of businesses involved in cage fish farming. In recent years, Hoa Binh has implemented many policies and support measures to develop cage fish farming on Hoa Binh Lake commensurate with its potential and advantages.
Ten years ago, the number of fish cages/rafts on the hydroelectric reservoir was about 1,700, and now it has increased to more than 5,000 cages. Along with the rapid increase in quantity, businesses and people in the lake area have been making efforts to continuously improve product quality. "Da River Shrimp - Hoa Binh", "Da River Fish - Hoa Binh" are two brands that have affirmed their position in the market.
Quality makes the brand
Hai Dang Group Seafood Company Limited (Hoa Binh City) is a company with over 30 years of experience in the fishing industry on the Da River. In the early 90s, Hai Dang started its business with the brand name Bay Tuyen Fish Farm, exploiting fish species from Hoa Binh to Lai Chau.
In 2012, the facility started raising fish in Hoa Binh Lake with 20 fish cages according to VietGAP standards. In 2015, the facility established Hai Dang HB Seafood Company Limited. In 2017, it began to promote the development and promotion of Hai Dang Da River Fish products to bring them closer to customers in provinces and cities.
By 2020, the company's products: black carp floss, black catfish floss, yellow catfish floss will be certified with 4-star OCOP by the province. In 2022, the company will develop a fish farm with a scale of up to 9 hectares and 300 fish cages according to VietGAP standards.
Cage fish farming is developing strongly on Hoa Binh hydroelectric lake (Hoa Binh province).
In 2023, develop Hai Dang's ecosystem including: aquaculture combined with experiential tourism, boat services, restaurants, and accommodations. In 2024, change the name to Hai Dang Group Seafood Company Limited.
CEO of Hai Dang Group Seafood Company Limited Nguyen Thi Dung shared: To create the Da River cage fish brand, the fish fry are raised entirely with quality nutritional feed, with clear origin.
When the fish reach a weight of 1 kg or more, their diet will consist of 80% wild fish such as shrimp and ditch. In addition, the fish will be supplemented with nutrients such as vitamin C, minerals, multivitamins and especially garlic yeast to prevent pathogens.
Fish are raised for a guaranteed 2-3 years before being harvested. Hai Dang's clean fish products absolutely do not use antibiotics in farming to ensure the health of consumers.
"No antibiotics - no growth hormones - no heavy metal residues", that is Hai Dang's affirmation of its products. According to Ms. Dung, every day, fish are transported from Hoa Binh lake to the northern provinces.
Hai Dang has perfected the packaging process to maintain the quality of fresh Da River fish products during long-distance transportation.
Currently, depending on customer needs, the company can package in 4 ways, including: clean and vacuum-sealed whole fish in ice boxes; clean and cut into pieces then vacuum-sealed in ice boxes; clean and canned in ice boxes; transport live fish in oxygen-filled bags. On average, the company exports about 500 tons of various types of commercial fish to the market each year.
While Hai Dang has decades of experience, Da Giang Eco Cooperative was recently established and has embarked on the cage fish farming business on Hoa Binh Lake. Established in 2023, Da Giang Eco has achieved success, also pursuing the direction of clean fish farming.
Mr. Xa Ngoc Hung, Director of the Cooperative, shared: Tien Phong is one of the communes of Da Bac district bordering Hoa Binh reservoir, with great potential for cage fish farming. In fact, fish farming has been developed for decades but has not brought high economic efficiency. One of the reasons is the lack of connection in production, lack of knowledge about science and technology.
The cooperative was established with 17 official members and dozens of associated households. The synchronization in production, especially in the consumption stage, has opened a turning point for the development of cage fish farming in this commune in a particularly difficult area.
Mr. Hung said: The cooperative's fish farming environment is very clean because there are few boats passing by. The cooperative does not use antibiotics, but uses natural leaves to raise the fish, so the fish are healthy, grow well and have no antibiotic residues in the fish.
The fish are raised entirely with oil shrimp, so they are delicious and trusted by consumers. Up to now, the cooperative has products certified with 3-star OCOP, the main consumption market is in Hanoi.
The attraction of "water monsters" raised on the Da River
In order to build and sustainably develop the Da River fish and shrimp brand, over the past years, Hoa Binh has implemented many promotional activities, product introductions, and trade promotion. The most prominent is the successful organization of the first Da River Fish and Shrimp Festival in Hoa Binh province in October 2023.
Most recently, the second Da River Fish and Shrimp Festival in Hoa Binh province was successfully held in November 2024. The auction of "giant" fish raised on Hoa Binh lake attracted diners from inside and outside the province to participate.
In 2023, for the first time, domestic consumers witnessed two large fish brought to auction, including a 30 kg Da River black carp from Hai Dang Group Seafood Company Limited; a 20 kg red-tailed catfish from Cuong Thinh Construction and Service Company Limited.
At the 2024 festival, these two businesses continued to auction two fish of even "bigger" size than before. Of which, Hai Dang brought a sturgeon weighing 45 kg, auctioned for 150 million VND; Cuong Thinh brought a black carp weighing 30 kg, auctioned for 105 million VND.
The entire auction proceeds were used to buy fish fry to restore aquatic resources in Hoa Binh Lake. Mr. Nguyen Dinh Hieu (Hanoi), the owner of the successful auction of a 45 kg sturgeon, shared: I really love fish products from the Da River because of their outstanding delicious quality.
Many times I have experienced fishing on the Da River and dreamed of conquering the "giant" fish here but it was very difficult. Therefore, I was very happy to successfully bid and own a large fish raised on Hoa Binh Lake.
It can be said that the successful organization of the Da River Fish and Shrimp Festival has created a new "playground" to promote the seafood brand of Hoa Binh. Comrade Luong Thanh Hai, Head of the Provincial Department of Fisheries, said: In order to build and develop the Da River fish and shrimp brand, on June 5, 2024, the Provincial People's Committee issued Decision No. 966/QD-UBND approving the Project on Developing Aquaculture of Hoa Binh Hydropower Reservoir in Association with Tourism until 2030.
This is the legal basis and strategic orientation for managing, developing and exploiting the potential and advantages of aquatic products in Hoa Binh reservoir until 2030. The province has identified tourism as the "driver" to enhance the value of the Da River shrimp and fish brand. The long-term orientation of Hoa Binh is to exploit the value of the Da River shrimp and fish brand, not to produce Da River aquatic products.
