Speaking at a press conference, Prime Minister Trudeau said that the first tariff package on goods worth CAD 30 billion will take effect from February 4, and the next package on goods worth CAD 125 billion will be implemented in 21 days.

The Canadian prime minister also said the government is considering a number of non-tariff responses, including actions related to critical minerals, energy purchase agreements and other partnerships between the two countries.

In addition, Prime Minister Trudeau called on Canadians to buy more domestic products and stimulate domestic consumption in the coming time. He warned that the new US tariffs would hurt the country itself and said Canada and Mexico are working together to respond to Washington's new tariffs.

Earlier the same day, President Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on all goods from Canada and Mexico starting February 4, except for Canadian energy products subject to a 10% tariff.

President Donald Trump's top trade adviser Peter Navarro later warned that "it is likely that the US will increase tariffs" if Mexico, Canada or China respond to the newly announced tariffs.
