The visit comes just a week after a US Air Force plane carrying more than 100 Indian immigrants landed in Amritsar, Punjab.

Announcing at a press conference today (February 7), Indian Deputy Foreign Minister Vikram Misri said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US from February 12-13 will further promote and orient bilateral relations.
Thus, Mr. Modi will be present in Washington DC in the first month after President Donald Trump took office, in the context of the White House owner threatening to impose tariffs on India and the new administration deployed military aircraft to deport 104 illegal Indian immigrants on February 4.
“Prime Minister Modi will be among the first few world leaders to visit the US” after Trump returns to the White House on January 20, according to Deputy Minister Vikram Misri. The Indian leader’s invitation to Washington DC, less than three weeks after the new administration took office, “shows the importance of the India-US partnership and also reflects the bipartisan support in the US.”
The new president met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on February 4 and is expected to hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru this week in Washington DC.
Last week, Prime Minister Modi and President Trump had a phone call that was described as "productive". According to the White House, the two discussed immigration, security and trade relations. Prime Minister Modi called Mr. Trump his "dear friend", emphasizing that the two sides worked together for "the welfare of our people" and "towards global peace".
The two leaders had a warm relationship during Trump 1.0, which was evident when the White House chief hosted the Prime Minister at the 'Howdy Modi' event in Houston in September 2019. Prime Minister Modi reciprocated by hosting a 'Namaste Trump' event in Ahmedabad during Trump's visit to India in February 2020.
Last year, Mr Trump called Prime Minister Modi a "great leader", but has also previously described India as a "tariff king" and a "major abuser" of trade relations.
According to IndiaToday, the “Trump effect” was seen in the Union Budget presented by Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman last week, in which the government cut duties on items mainly exported by the US, such as motorcycles (Harley-Davidson) with engine capacity below 1,600 cc.
The flight carrying 104 Indians was part of a crackdown on illegal immigration by the Trump administration. According to CNN , about 18,000 illegal immigrants from India are being identified by the US government for deportation. |
