Good income from fish sauce making

Coming to Lam Thuy village, Hai Hung commune, Hai Lang district, Quang Tri province, asking about the traditional fish sauces made by Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hoa (born in 1987), everyone praised them. "As if by fate, I started making fish sauce 7 years ago and have been attached to the profession until today. This job not only brings me a good income but also brings me joy and connection with customers in many places", Ms. Hoa confided.

Ms. Hoa’s house is located near Phuong Lang market. When we arrived, some customers were already there waiting to buy the snakehead fish sauce she had just brewed not long ago. Ms. Nguyen Thi May, a happy customer, introduced: “Ms. Hoa’s fish sauce is delicious and clean, so you can rest assured about the quality. It’s worth a try! My house is nearby, so when I finish eating it, I’ll come back and buy some more.”

At home, in addition to snakehead fish sauce jars, Ms. Hoa also makes many other types of fish sauce such as herring fish sauce, eggplant fish sauce, dam fish sauce..., which are also loved by many people. When asked about the opportunity to come to this profession, Ms. Hoa shared: “My first job after returning to my hometown from Hue City was selling online. However, during this time, I realized that in my hometown there are very delicious fish sauces, made from locally available ingredients but not known to many people. So I decided to learn and start making the first jars of fish sauce.”

It is known that to have the skills as present, she also experienced many failures. But the more difficult it was, the more she did not get discouraged but tried harder to gradually improve her products.

With a stable customer base thanks to previous online sales, Ms. Hoa's fish sauce quickly became known and accepted by consumers. Mr. Hoang Ngoc Bao, a customer of Ms. Hoa who currently lives in the United States, said: "As a native of Hai Lang, when I ate the snakehead fish sauce made by Ms. Hoa, I found it very tasty. Every now and then, I ask my friends and relatives to buy fish sauce to bring here to ease my homesickness." Ms. Hoa said that making fish sauce is not a difficult job or takes too much time, but it brings her a relatively stable source of income.

In addition to making fish sauce, Ms. Hoa also maintains and develops the job of cooking for weddings and parties for local people. This job is much harder than making fish sauce, but it brings her a good income during each peak season. Besides, she also creates jobs and income for 2-3 workers in the area. On average, each year, from economic models, Ms. Hoa saves over 70 million VND. Although busy with her business, this woman still arranges her time to take full care of her small family; actively participates in activities launched by the Women's Union at all levels and in the locality.

Vice President of the Women's Union of Hai Hung Commune, Nguyen Thi Hien, assessed that Ms. Hoa is a young member but always active and enthusiastic in activities and movements implemented by the Women's Union at all levels. In particular, taking advantage of locally available ingredients, she has created rustic dishes that are associated with the meals of many families.

“The Women's Union of Hai Hung commune has chosen Ms. Hoa's economic model as a model to support members in starting and starting a business in 2025. Currently, the Women's Union of the commune is developing a plan to connect, support and guide business owners to register labels for each type of product. At the same time, it will introduce Ms. Hoa to participate in training courses to improve her skills; ensure food hygiene and safety during the production process. These will help Ms. Hoa create quality, safe products that are also beautiful in appearance with full labels and product information before reaching consumers,” Ms. Hien affirmed.
