For a long time, Quang Ngai province lacked high-class accommodation infrastructure and standard event organization services to serve businesses, international visitors and high-demand tourists, affecting its competitiveness compared to other provinces and cities in the region.

Poor tourism and service infrastructure

According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Ngai province, there are currently about 390 accommodation establishments in the province, with about 4,950 rooms; including 4 4-star hotels and equivalent, 8 3-star hotels and equivalent; 2 2-star hotels and equivalent; 63 hotels that meet the minimum conditions to serve tourists with about 2,300 rooms. The number of accommodation establishments has increased steadily over the years, but mainly in the form of motels and homestays.

The accommodation system in the province is mostly small-scale, with a very low percentage of star-rated hotels; the number of accommodation establishments is mainly concentrated in Quang Ngai city, Duc Pho town and the two districts of Ly Son and Binh Son. The key tourist area of ​​Quang Ngai province is Ly Son island district, which currently has more than 100 accommodation establishments, with more than 1,000 rooms; of which, there is only one 4-star hotel and one 3-star equivalent hotel and 24 hotels that meet the minimum requirements to serve tourists.

Coming to Quang Ngai province for work and to visit relatives, Ms. Van Yen, from Binh Dinh province, could not find a suitable place to stay for her family. “I asked a friend to find a hotel and stayed at Thien An hotel, but after 30 minutes of being there, I went to find a homestay to stay. The hotel was damp, the equipment was degraded and the service attitude of the staff was not very good,” Ms. Van Yen reported.

As an industrially developed province, attracting many domestic and international investors, Quang Ngai province has not yet had a high-class resort or entertainment area that meets 5-star standards. In particular, there is a lack of 4-5 star hotels to serve the needs of investors, businesses, international visitors and tourists with high spending capacity.

An investor representative in Dung Quat Economic Zone said, “We often invite partners to the company to work, negotiate contracts and hold important meetings. However, there are no conference rooms or hotels with the necessary standards, so the company often has to organize in Da Nang city. If we welcome guests to visit the factory or project, they will then move to a nearby place like Quang Nam province.”

In addition, some establishments have not focused on investing and upgrading facilities, lack professionalism in design and are degraded; lack of supporting services such as restaurants, bars, swimming pools... not meeting the increasing demands of tourists.

According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Ngai province, because the province does not have preferential policies to attract investment in accommodation infrastructure; the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has not attracted many investors; some businesses cannot access land, implementation is slow and tentative due to financial capacity... Leading to limited accommodation infrastructure, not diverse, not meeting the needs of organizing large-scale and national events and activities.

Lacking high-end accommodation and service infrastructure, many investors and businesses have to organize events in neighboring provinces and cities.

Need to attract diverse infrastructure projects

In the past two years, Quang Ngai province has received many proposals for large-scale tourism projects such as: Square Park Project combined with urban area - ecological services of Quang Ngai city, Coastal Quang Ngai ecological urban area, Dong Quang Ngai ecological urban area, Dong Nam Dung Quat new urban area - South and Dong Nam Dung Quat new urban area - North. For tourism projects that have been and are being implemented, the functional sector supports investors with legal procedures, guides on land access, planning information; requests investors to voluntarily terminate projects that are behind schedule, no longer suitable for planning, unable to access land, etc.

According to Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Ngai province Nguyen Tien Dung, to improve the quantity and quality of accommodation infrastructure, the relevant authorities will implement many solutions. In particular, promoting and attracting investment in high-end accommodation complex projects with international brands, especially 3-5 star hotels in key tourist areas, economic zones, industrial parks; proposing mechanisms and policies to support investors to enjoy tax incentives, land use fees, etc. At the same time, creating an open investment environment to attract investment in infrastructure and tourism accommodation infrastructure.

“The Department will also regularly inspect and re-evaluate the quality of accommodation facilities to promptly support and encourage owners to invest, upgrade and expand supplementary services. In addition, it will provide training and fostering of skills, professional expertise and improve service quality.”

Developing accommodation infrastructure, diversifying hotel segments, high-end services to meet the needs of investors, businesses and developing tourism. For many years, Quang Ngai province has not developed this field, greatly affecting its competitiveness in attracting investment compared to provinces in the Central Highlands and the tourism industry has been "standing still" for a long time.
