According to Decision No. 152 (January 17, 2025) of Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long. The information was announced by Mr. Le Van Hoa, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Culture and Sports, on January 19. This is an important event for the Cham Pa cultural heritage. Along with Ponagar Tower, the 17th ranking in 2025 also honored 4 other relics across the country, including: Boi Khe Pagoda (Hanoi), Xam Temple (Nam Dinh), the relic cluster related to the Mac Dynasty in Duong Kinh (Hai Phong) and the Tu Luong Xam relic cluster - Ngo Quyen's headquarters in 938 (Hai Phong).
Located in Vinh Phuoc ward, Nha Trang city, Ponagar Tower has been ranked as a National Monument since 1979. The relic site was built by the Cham people from the 8th to the 13th century on Cu Lao hill, worshiping Goddess Ponagar, considered the Mother of the Cham people. The original architectural complex included the gate tower, Mandapa (guest house) and the temple tower area. To date, the relic site still preserves 5 architectural works belonging to the Mandapa and the temple tower area. The Mandapa stands out with four rows of large octagonal columns built of baked bricks. The temple tower area consists of four main towers: the Northeast Tower (Main Tower) is 23m high, worshiping Goddess Ponagar; the South Tower is 18m high, according to Vietnamese legend, worshiping the husband of Thien YA Na Thanh Mau (Mr. Tower); the Southeast Tower is 7.1m high, according to Vietnamese legend, worshiping the adoptive parents of Thien YA Na Thanh Mau (Mr. Tower and Mrs. Tieu); and the 9m high Northwest Tower, worshiping the god Ganesha, according to Vietnamese legend, the son of Thien YA Na Thanh Mau (Thap Co, Cau). Ponagar Tower is not only a unique architectural work but also a testament to the special construction and brick making techniques of the ancient Cham people. The mysteries of this construction technique have not yet been fully solved. The relic site also preserves many ancient steles, recording the history and culture of the land.
According to Mr. Le Van Hoa, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Culture and Sports: "The ranking of Ponagar Tower as a Special National Monument is an important event, contributing to enhancing the position of the monument in the system of Vietnamese cultural heritage. This ranking will create more favorable conditions for the work of preserving, embellishing and promoting the value of the monument, while attracting domestic and foreign tourists to visit and learn about Cham Pa culture". With the new title, Ponagar Tower promises to attract a large number of domestic and foreign tourists to visit and learn about Cham Pa culture, contributing to the development of tourism in Khanh Hoa province.
