Military expert explains why the Avanguard hypersonic glide vehicle cannot be intercepted?

Speaking to Russia's Lenta news agency, retired Colonel and military expert Anatoly Matviychuk said that Russia's Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle cannot be tracked in flight and is therefore virtually invulnerable to all Western air defense systems.

The Avangard missile, like the Oreshnik, has a flight path programming module, constantly changing its position in space during maneuvers ,” Matviychuk explains.

None of the existing anti-missile systems – Patriot, IRIS-T – can calculate its movements. If you cannot calculate it, you cannot destroy it. This is one of the most mobile munitions in Russia ,” military expert Anatoly Matviychuk assessed.

Previously, the authors of the American magazine Military Watch said that due to the design characteristics of the Avangard system, intercepting it is almost impossible.

According to the authors, the glide vehicle's design with a hypersonic ramjet engine would allow it to deliver nuclear strikes at speeds exceeding Mach 27. “ This is said to make it virtually impossible to intercept ,” Military Watch notes.

Earlier, in December 2024, the Commander of the Strategic Missile Forces, General Sergei Karakaev, said that launchers carrying Avangard systems with warheads were operating under the control of Bugai command posts. Avangard is installed on new-generation intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Lithuania buys modern Leopard-2A8 tanks

German company KNDS Deutschland GmbH announced the signing of a contract to supply 44 Leopard-2A8 main battle tanks to the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

The contract was signed with the German Federal Office for Armaments, Information Technology and Maintenance (BAAINBw) on behalf of the Defense Procurement Agency of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense.

Lithuania becomes the 23rd country in the world to own Leopard-2 tanks. The contract is worth 950 million euros ($990 million). In addition to the tanks, the deal also includes the supply of spare parts and logistics.

In May 2024, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense signed an agreement with Germany on the joint purchase of Leopard-2A8 main battle tanks. Participation in this framework agreement allows Lithuania to obtain modern tanks on the same terms as the German Armed Forces.

Lithuanian Minister of Defence, Dovile Šakalienė, during his visit to Berlin on 16 December, signed an agreement authorising BAAINBw, on behalf of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence, to conclude a contract with KNDS Deutschland for the supply of 44 Leopard 2A8 tanks and related equipment.

The decision to purchase Leopard 2 was based on the results of an assessment carried out by the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence and other relevant organisations, taking into account political, economic and financial aspects. Based on the results of the assessment, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence was instructed to start negotiations with German manufacturers and other partner countries interested in purchasing German equipment.

Together with Germany and other partner countries, the latest version of this tank, Leopard-2A8, will be purchased. The tank battalion consisting of 3 companies will have 44 tanks.

"Leopard-2A8" will be equipped with the Trophy active protection system, which will provide it with effective protection in a 360-degree area against threats from anti-tank missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Dutch soldiers put into use anti-drone attack system

The Royal Netherlands Army plans to equip soldiers with personal drone defense equipment, Defense News reported.

The conflict in Ukraine and events in the Middle East have shown that the threat from drones is serious and that the Dutch Army currently lacks the equipment needed to defend itself effectively.

Soldiers are increasingly facing unwanted attacks or reconnaissance using small unmanned systems, said Dutch Defense Minister Gijs Tuinman... The ability to destroy drones is essential to keeping soldiers safe while carrying out their missions.

The Netherlands is moving to a layered air defense system to defend against large drones, but such systems are ineffective against small, inexpensive drones. Instead, soldiers rely primarily on individual weapons or standard weapons systems to protect themselves. The Dutch Ministry of Defense plans to purchase anti-drone equipment in the first quarter of 2025 for between 50 million and 250 million euros.

New technologies include electro-optical sights for individual weapons, such as laser designators, which will significantly improve the accuracy of targeting small drones at distances of 200m, along with mobile drone jammers and mobile radio frequency sensors that allow for earlier detection of possible drone threats.

The Netherlands will mainly focus on equipping units stationed near the front line, including NATO's eastern border.

In September 2024, NATO held a counter-drone exercise in the Netherlands. The exercise involved 19 NATO member states and three partner countries, including Ukraine. The exercise tested more than 60 systems and technologies to detect and neutralize drones, including jammers and sensors.

The Netherlands is not alone in planning to equip its military with anti-drone technology. Belgium recently signed a contract with NATO’s Acquisition and Sustainment Agency to equip it with jammers and mobile sensors, while Germany and the UK are buying kill systems.
