Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên02/07/2023

Dr Sreystha Beppari, consultant psychiatrist, Apollo Clinic (India), said that feeling sad when it rains is often called "rainy season blues". For some people, the rainy season can bring about feelings of sadness or fatigue due to the continuous rain, according to the Indian Express.

Researchers from Brigham Young University (USA) have come up with the term "rainy season blues" to describe the mood disorder that some people experience during the rainy season. The study, published in the medical journal Journal of Affective Disorders , sheds light on the link between weather conditions and emotions.

For some people, the rainy season can bring a sense of melancholy.

The “rainy season blues” could indicate the presence of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), adds Sreystha Beppari.

What is seasonal affective disorder?

Dr Soumiya Mudgal, senior consultant from the Department of Behavioural Sciences and Mental Health, Max Hospital (India), said that some people tend to have more mood swings when the weather changes, due to their circadian rhythm.

When the rainy season starts, you will feel your mood drop, says Soumiya Mudgal.

Delhi-based psychologist Aishwarya Raj said the "monsoon blues" can affect people in different ways, but common symptoms include feelings of sadness, fatigue, lethargy, decreased motivation, irritability, changes in appetite, difficulty concentrating and a general feeling of low mood, according to the Indian Express.

Changes in weather, reduced sunlight and increased humidity during the rainy season contribute to the above symptoms.

The rainy season brings fresh and clean air after hot days.

What to do to manage and prevent "rainy season sadness"?

Here are some ways to manage emotions during the rainy season shared by expert Raj:

Regular exercise can boost mood and energy levels.

Spending time outdoors when it's sunny can help regulate your circadian rhythm and improve your mood.

Stay connected with friends, family and loved ones.

Eat a nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

Prioritize a regular sleep schedule and ensure 7-8 hours of sleep every night , according to Indian Express.
