According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha, a pork trader at Rang Tech market, Son La city, 3 months ago, the price of pork increased daily. Previously, the selling price at slaughterhouses was stable at 70,000 VND/kg, now it has increased to 110,000 VND/kg. This is the highest level in more than a year.
Ms. Lo Thi Inh, a pork trader at Goc Phuong market, said: Before Tet, ribs were sold for 120,000 VND/kg, now they have increased to 150,000 VND/kg; lean shoulder meat has increased from 100,000 VND/kg to 130,000 VND/kg. In addition, pig's feet, rump, and belly have also increased by about 20,000 VND/kg.
Pork is the main food in people's meals, so despite the price increase, pork consumption in the province is still relatively stable. Ms. Hoang Thi Van, To Hieu ward, Son La city, said: My husband and I are workers, a family of 4, normally there is always pork in the family's food ration. However, recently, pork prices have increased, so I switched to preparing dishes from fish and chicken which are more affordable.
As a long-time pig farmer, Mr. Lo Minh Van, Hom village, Chieng Co commune, Son La city, shared: His family built a solid pig pen, which can raise 50 sows and hundreds of pigs for sale each litter. Since the beginning of the year, the price of live pigs has increased to the highest level in the past 4 years, helping farmers and businesses make a profit after a long period of loss.
Cao Da Son La Joint Stock Company, Cao Da 1 village, Phieng Ban commune, Bac Yen district has a farm raising nearly 2,000 commercial pigs, selling an average of about 400 pigs/month, with a price of nearly 70,000 VND/kg of live pigs. Currently, the price of live pigs is increasing, but the company is still very cautious, maintaining the number of herds not increasing, to ensure effective control of livestock farming as well as the environment.
Mr. Mai Kha Tuan, Deputy Director of Cao Da Son La Joint Stock Company, said: When the price of live pigs increases, many small-scale farmers, cooperatives and livestock enterprises tend to increase their herds, but in my opinion, we should not increase herds massively, because purchasing power will not increase proportionally if farms and farmers increase their herds simultaneously at the same time.
According to the report of the provincial Statistics Office, in the first quarter, the pig herd was estimated at 601,020 heads, an increase of 6.17%, about 34,920 heads. The output of live pigs for slaughter reached 14,950 tons, an increase of 2.68% over the same period last year.
To ensure sustainable livestock farming, the provincial Department of Livestock, Veterinary and Fisheries recommends that people, businesses and cooperatives operating in the livestock sector regularly update and monitor market information and prices of livestock products to have appropriate production development plans and ensure consumption sources.
At the same time, pig farmers in the province need to invest in the direction of disease safety, ensuring food hygiene, linking production with product consumption. Replicate high-tech, closed-loop farming models, reduce small-scale farming, and avoid pig farmers falling into a situation where pig prices fall when supply exceeds demand.
