Possessing a diverse terrain with a system of majestic mountains, rivers, plateaus, grasslands, tea hills, primeval forests, and a rich cultural identity, is an important advantage for Son La to develop sports tourism. Notably, Moc Chau Tourist Area has an area of 206,150 hectares, located in Moc Chau and Van Ho districts, which can meet the needs of tourists who love adventure sports, ecological sports, and experiences.
It has become an annual event, when the plum blossom season is in full bloom, thousands of domestic and international athletes gather in Moc Chau town to participate in the Vietnam Trail Marathon. This year, the race attracted more than 3,000 athletes from 40 countries and territories. The athletes chose to run 70 km, 42 km, 21 km, 10 km, 5 km on trails, through many places with beautiful natural scenery, peaceful villages, grasslands, tea hills, plum and apricot flower valleys.
Moc Chau is considered one of the most beautiful running routes in Vietnam. In 2025, the 7th Vietnam Trail Marathon was held in Moc Chau town. Finishing first in the men's 42 km category, athlete Stephen Anthony Brakey from the Republic of Ireland shared: I have participated in many races in many places around the world, but coming to Moc Chau is really attractive. The natural scenery is majestic and wild, the people are friendly and welcoming, the organization is professional. I will definitely return to Moc Chau with my friends to explore this wonderful land.
At the end of March, Moc Chau Island Tourist Area - Bach Long Glass Bridge in collaboration with Moc Chau Enduro Motorcycle Club, Moc Chau town organized the Vietnam Off-Road Motorcycle Race 2025, with the participation of more than 100 athletes from more than 20 countries and territories. This is the second time the tournament has been held at Moc Chau Island, creating a playground for off-road motorcycle racers to show their talents; with many exciting and dramatic racing and chasing phases, attracting a large number of spectators, people and tourists from inside and outside the province to watch and cheer.
Along with that, Moc Chau is also an ideal destination for athletes and tourists who are passionate about paragliding, hot air ballooning, and conquering Pha Luong peak... Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, Vice Chairman of Moc Chau Town People's Committee, shared: Sports events attract a large number of tourists to the venues, creating a great impact on both the economy and society. This is also an opportunity to spread the image of Moc Chau National Tourist Area - the leading natural destination in Asia and the world to domestic and international tourists.
Promoting the advantages of terrain, nature, and landscape, Van Ho district coordinates to organize many sports competitions such as: Vietnam Off-Road Motorcycle Race in 2022, 2023. VTV Cup Off-Road Bike Race in 2024. These are professional competitions, nationwide, attracting foreign athletes living in Vietnam to participate.
Mr. Vu Thanh Hai, Vice Chairman of Van Ho District People's Committee, informed: The district creates the best conditions for units to survey and organize sports tournaments in the district. Through sports tournaments, promote the tourism potential, rich, diverse and unique community culture of Van Ho land to domestic and foreign tourists. Thereby, exploiting and promoting the potential, advantages, promoting the development of tourist areas in the area.
In recent years, localities in the province have organized many sports activities associated with tourism exploration and experience activities: Mountain climbing competition to conquer the legendary Hai mountain in Son La city; conquering Ta Tao peak, Ngoc Chien commune, Muong La district; conquering Phu Sa Phin peak, Hang Chu commune, Bac Yen district; conquering Khau Pum peak, Chieng Khay commune, Quynh Nhai district; paragliding and windsurfing performances on the hydroelectric reservoir... These activities attract a large number of people and tourists, contributing to promoting the diverse and unique tourism products of Son La.
Mr. Do The Cong, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said: Localities have strengthened close coordination with related sectors, especially between the tourism sector, the sports sector, sports event organizers, between tour operators and event organizers to form a chain of quality, methodical services, creating a good impression for domestic and international tourists when experiencing sports tourism products.
Developing sports tourism is a necessary step, contributing to diversifying tourism types, building Son La province as an attractive destination for domestic and foreign tourists on their journey through the Northwest.
