Introducing the new transgenic corn variety NK6101BGT

As the second largest food crop after rice, corn plays an important role in the crop structure in Vietnam. Currently, corn is grown mainly in the Northern Midlands and Mountains, the Central Highlands, the North Central Coast and the Central Coast, etc., providing the main source of raw materials for the livestock and animal feed processing industry.

However, corn farmers face many challenges in the cultivation process, including unfavorable weather, soil conditions, and pest and disease pressure. In fact, in addition to technical factors, good varieties are the prerequisite for effective cultivation. The application of new generation corn varieties with higher yields than traditional corn varieties while investment costs do not increase, bringing double benefits, both preserving corn yield and increasing income for farmers.

Syngenta has also introduced many famous corn varieties with high yield, good resistance to pests and adaptability to many different weather and climate conditions such as NK7328, NK6253, NK4300, NK6101... but with the position of a leading company in the seed industry, Syngenta constantly researches and tests to continue to produce more perfect products, better meeting the expectations of farmers across the country. Therefore, Syngenta launched the F1 transgenic single hybrid corn variety NK6101BGT.

The F1 transgenic single hybrid corn variety NK6101BGT has been researched and tested in Vietnam by Syngenta scientists since 2017. Through thousands of evaluation tests, NK6101BGT with BGT transgenic technology has proven its superiority and was recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in October 2023. Before being officially introduced to Vietnamese farmers, NK6101BGT underwent hundreds of large and small tests over 5 years, in many crop seasons and in 5 different ecological regions across the country, from the Northern midlands and mountainous areas, North Central, Central Highlands, Southeast to the Mekong Delta and all achieved positive results.

The growth period of the F1 transgenic corn variety NK6101BGT in the northern region is 110 - 120 days and in the southern region the growth period is 100 - 110 days, and can be grown in many crops a year. With many outstanding advantages, the F1 transgenic corn variety NK6101BGT not only effectively prevents stem borers but also has very high grain yield.

High economic efficiency, cost reduction

As one of the farmers in Son La province who has grown the NK6101BGT genetically modified corn provided by Syngenta Vietnam Co., Ltd., Mr. Dinh Van Quyen, a farmer in Van Ho district, Son La province, shared: "The NK6101BGT genetically modified corn has a strong root system, large stems, can be grown on steep hills, is resistant to pests, so the leaves are green and disease-free. In terms of economic efficiency, the NK6101BGT genetically modified corn has given higher economic efficiency, significantly reduced pesticide costs, thereby reducing production costs and prices, bringing higher profits than conventional varieties by about 8 million VND/ha."

Talking to PV of Dan Viet Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Huy Cuong, Director of Seeds, Syngenta Vietnam Co., Ltd. said: "The new BGT gene transfer technology combines 2 technologies Agrisure and Herculex with 2 gene transfer events of insect resistance Bt11 and TC1507, creating a dual layer of action, preventing stem borers more effectively, improving crop productivity, helping farmers reduce the use of pesticides in the cultivation process, contributing to reducing production costs and reducing the risk of environmental pollution. Inheriting the characteristics of the NK6101 background variety, the NK6101BGT transgenic corn variety has a set of green leaves that are disease-free, tightly covered, less rotten, less weevils, and resistant to germination on corn...".

According to Mr. Cuong, these advantages are suitable for dry corn growing on the fields following the "hanging lamp farming" practice of farmers in the northern mountainous provinces. These outstanding advantages are confirmed by authentic data when the results of recent trials show that the NK6101BGT corn variety has stable yields, 9-17% higher than the base variety, estimated at more than 9 tons/ha".
