Surgeries that saved children at the last minute
In the cozy space of Tinh Thuc Quan, simple and refreshing vegetarian dishes become a bridge to help us open our hearts and share about life and our profession. Doctor Nguyen Ly Thinh Truong, with his gentle and profound way of talking, not only shares the difficulties in the medical profession, but also reveals his thoughts about life. He believes that being vegetarian is not only a way to purify the body, but also an opportunity to calm down, listen to yourself and listen to others.
The stories not only revolved around work, but also simple, yet meaningful moments, making the meeting a lesson in patience, dedication and unconditional love that doctors have for their profession and for life.
With his passion and ability to perform microsurgery, Dr. Truong has directly performed most of the complex congenital heart disease cases in newborns and children at the National Children's Hospital.
Born into a working-class family in Hanoi, fate was probably what pushed the young man to dream of becoming a doctor. Doctor Truong still remembers that when he was in elementary school, he and his grandfather made medicinal pills from herbs according to traditional medicine recipes from his grandfather's medicine book, with the hope of helping the sick.
Dr. Truong also had a special passion for sports when he was in school. He was an active athlete, especially fond of basketball and football. This passion helped him train his health, patience, endurance and especially team spirit - indispensable factors in the medical profession, especially in surgeries - which require precision and decisiveness.
After graduating from high school, he entered Hanoi Medical University and graduated as a general practitioner, then continued to study cardiology at major hospitals in the country and internationally. The years of study were full of hardship due to his family's difficult circumstances, but his passion and love for patients were the main motivations that helped him build a solid foundation of medical knowledge and perseverance to pursue his dream of saving children with congenital heart disease.
During his many years of working, this doctor born in 1979, with his skillful hands, together with his colleagues at the Cardiovascular Center, National Children's Hospital, has directly performed nearly ten thousand major surgeries, helping to save the lives of many children with congenital heart disease, most of which are very complicated and high-risk cases.
One of the famous surgeries that Dr. Truong directly performed was that of Nguyen VV, who suffered from transposition of the great arteries - a very complicated and serious congenital heart disease. Discovered through the Viettel Group's "Heart for Children" program, V. was in very poor health and was not eligible for immediate surgery due to the country's conditions in the early 2010s and his family's difficult circumstances.
Although the charity team discovered that his condition was in the late stages, he and his colleagues still decided to perform the risky surgery, which lasted nearly 5 hours. After the successful surgery, VV recovered quickly and was able to return to school and integrate into life like any other child.
Another touching story is that of Mai Thi L., a child from a remote area, who was born with congenital heart disease. Her family was very poor and could not afford treatment. After being discovered in a free medical examination and treatment program organized by the National Children's Hospital, L. was saved by surgery by Dr. Truong.
Before the surgery, L.'s health condition was very critical, but with skillful techniques and unconditional love for the patient, Dr. Truong and his colleagues successfully performed the surgery, saving her life and helping her family have a new life. The story of Mai Thi L. was widely spread by the media and became a testament to Dr. Truong's tireless efforts in treating poor children with heart disease.
The program "Heart for Children" - a cooperation initiative between the National Children's Hospital and Viettel Group has created conditions for Dr. Truong to directly direct many screening programs, participate in many surgeries for patients in this program, helping to inspire confidence, bring hope and happiness to parents whose children have congenital heart disease and whose family circumstances are difficult.
With his passion and ability to perform microsurgery, Dr. Truong has directly performed most of the complex congenital heart disease cases in newborns and children at the National Children's Hospital, contributing to saving the lives of babies in critical condition right from birth, and at the same time contributing to building the Cardiovascular Center, National Children's Hospital to become one of the leading centers in Southeast Asia and Asia for neonatal heart surgery and complex congenital heart surgery.
The number of newborn and complex congenital heart patients undergoing surgery and intervention at the Cardiovascular Center, National Children's Hospital annually reaches over 700 children, with a survival rate of over 98%.
Recently, a newborn baby, although being prescribed to terminate the pregnancy by doctors from 3 major hospitals in Singapore, was diagnosed with hypoplastic left ventricle syndrome, but the cardiovascular team of the National Children's Hospital consulted and coordinated with the Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital to perform a spectacular timely intervention, and Dr. Truong directly performed surgery, repaired, and brought the baby's heart structure back to that of a normal heart.
Choose a simple lifestyle and peace of mind
Currently, in addition to his main job of pediatric heart surgery, Dr. Truong is also passionate about scientific research and developing new treatment methods in the field of cardiology. With over 20 international articles and many domestic articles, most of which he is the main author, his research on neonatal and complex heart surgery, as well as minimally invasive heart surgery, has contributed to increasing the success rate and especially helping to reduce the mortality rate as well as complications for patients. In addition, he also participates in many international conferences, to have the opportunity to learn and share experiences with the world's leading experts, applying them to treatment practices in Vietnam.
Over the years, he and his colleagues have traveled to remote areas to give children without access to modern medical care a chance at life. Under the direction of Dr. Truong, the Cardiovascular Center of the National Children's Hospital has treated tens of thousands of cases of congenital heart disease, many of which are extremely complicated, with a high risk of death, and most of which are considered incurable.
Although the entire team had to work long hours, sometimes exhausted, the motivation to save a life as well as the responsibility to bring hope to the patient's family helped the doctors and nurses at the Cardiovascular Center and Dr. Truong overcome all difficulties.
The Director of the Cardiovascular Center is also a beacon of inspiration for the young generation of doctors and the community about the power of humanity and dedication to work. For those who have had the opportunity to meet him, they will always remember a person who is not only a doctor, but also a friend and an older brother who is always willing to share professional experience with the next generations, as well as responsible and willing to sacrifice for the happiness of small creatures and their families.
As a famous doctor in the field of pediatric cardiology, Dr. Truong has a very simple lifestyle and always wishes and practices living a simple life, being close to people and respecting professional ethics, as well as ethics in life.
For Dr. Nguyen Ly Thinh Truong, happiness does not only come from money or fame, but from doing and spreading good things, helping others and living up to the values you believe in.
