Are students required to take military training?

According to the Law on National Defense and Security Education 2013 and the Law on Higher Education 2012 (amended in 2018), the subject of National Defense and Security Education (also known as military subjects) is a compulsory subject in the university training program. To be recognized as graduating, students must complete this subject.

Therefore, universities in Vietnam require students to attend military training. The course helps students understand the security and defense situation of the country, the region and the world. From there, raise the sense of civic responsibility, ready to protect the Fatherland.

At the same time, the military environment helps students practice discipline, responsibility, perseverance, courage and the ability to overcome difficulties. Any student must practice basic military skills such as team work, tactics, first aid, fire prevention, ... and soft skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem solving, and adapting to new environments.

One of the most important reasons for students to complete a military course is the national defense and security education certificate. This is a necessary certificate for university students to be eligible for university graduation. At the same time, to be granted a national defense and security education certificate, students must have an average score of 5 points or higher (on a 10-point scale) when participating in the military course.

To ensure timely graduation, students must have a certificate of national defense and security education. Otherwise, students must retake this subject until they are granted a certificate before they can be considered for graduation and leave school.

Cases of exemption or postponement from military training

Students are exempted from military training if they have a reserve officer certificate or a diploma issued by a military or police school and a certificate corresponding to their level of training. In addition, foreign students are also exempted from military training.

Students with disabilities who have a certificate of disability according to the law on people with disabilities, are physically unfit or have diseases that are exempt from military service according to current regulations, and students who have completed their military service or are public security officers will be exempted from learning military skills practice content.

The content of this circular also stipulates that students who have to stop studying for a long time for treatment due to health reasons must have a certificate from the hospital where they are treated, and female students who are pregnant or on maternity leave can temporarily postpone their military training.

Directors and principals of educational institutions are the ones who directly consider deferring military training for the above cases. After the deferment period, the educational institution must arrange for students to attend appropriate classes to complete the program.
