In the head-worn VR market, Meta remains a leading manufacturer. Their Quest 3 was considered a "flagship" device (the top-of-the-line device in its category, in the highest-end segment) until Apple launched the Vision Pro. The arrival of this new player was expected to create competition, but in reality, the Quest 3 and Vision Pro are two devices targeting completely different user groups.
Nevertheless, it's hard to avoid certain comparisons between the two products. While Apple CEO Tim Cook hadn't yet publicly discussed the Quest 3, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had already "had the chance to experience the Vision Pro" and shared his thoughts on the new device from Apple.
Meta CEO ( right ) believes there are many reasons to conclude that the Quest 3 headset is superior to the Vision Pro.
In a newly uploaded video , Mark stated that before trying Apple's Vision Pro firsthand, he expected the Quest to offer better value for users because he genuinely found the device to be better, not to mention its price being about seven times cheaper. "But after using the Vision Pro, I don't just think the Quest offers better value, I have to say the Quest is a better product. That's all."
Following the above statement, the CEO of Meta cited several features of their "homegrown" product compared to Apple's new device, leading him to make his assessment. These included higher quality, better suitability for gaming and social media use, access to a larger content library, an ergonomic design, and a lighter weight.
Those are certainly undeniable "advantages," but from a neutral perspective—one who neither loves nor hates either side—the Vision Pro still has its own strengths. Apple's head-worn device boasts a higher-resolution screen, has never been considered a product specifically for gaming (even in terms of design), and doesn't need to worry about Meta's VR app library as it's not a device prioritized for entertainment... At the same time, although the Quest 3 is lighter and has an ergonomic design, there have been numerous user complaints about its discomfort.
More importantly, the intended use and target customer base of these two devices are different, so Mark's comparison is considered "unfair." The Meta CEO emphasized that the Quest 3 is "superior" in terms of gaming and entertainment – areas that most VR devices currently target. Conversely, Apple seems to be trying to change that perception with its Vision Pro.
From the very introduction of Vision Pro and through its promotional videos, Apple has focused more on using this device to improve daily activities, mostly work-related tasks. Entertainment such as gaming and watching movies is only a part of it, not entirely what Apple is aiming for.
The price difference is debatable, as Apple devices are consistently priced higher than the average. The product's success remains to be seen, but it's not about "how well it meets the needs of the general customer base," but rather "how effectively it addresses the needs of its target customer group." Clearly, the Quest 3 is currently a top choice for gamers, but the Vision Pro is taking a different approach.
