Taking advantage of the sunny weather after the Tet holiday, farmers in localities in Ha Tinh are focusing on working in the fields to "close" the spring vegetable growing area.
In the vegetable fields of Bac Binh village, Tuong Son commune (Thach Ha), farmers are concentrating on preparing the land to plant new crops. Some people are taking advantage of the opportunity to harvest short-term green vegetables to sell at the market. The sunny weather makes plowing and land preparation easier for farmers.
Ms. Tran Thi Van (Bac Binh village, Tuong Son commune) harvests green beans to sell after Tet.
Ms. Tran Thi Van (Bac Binh village, Tuong Son commune, Thach Ha) shared: “Since the second day of Tet, I have been going to the fields to harvest vegetables to sell at the market because green vegetables have good prices. At this time, the price of mustard greens and Malabar spinach is cheaper than the second and third days of Tet but is still at 12,000 VND/bunch, 1/3 higher than normal days. In particular, green beans still maintain the price of 25,000 VND/kg. The high selling price means that each market session, I earn from 400,000 - 500,000 VND. Along with harvesting green vegetables, taking advantage of the sunny weather, my family also mobilized labor to focus on preparing the land of more than 2.5 sao in time to plant green squash next week.”
It is known that the concentrated vegetable production area of Bac Binh village, Tuong Son commune is more than 3 hectares wide with 34 households participating in production. Immediately after the 2024 Lunar New Year, the locality held a meeting to direct people to focus on vegetable production with the main crop being green squash.
People in Bac Binh village, Tuong Son commune (Thach Ha) "stick to the fields" to produce vegetables after Tet holiday
Mr. Duong Kim Huy - Chairman of Tuong Son Commune People's Committee said: "In the spring crop of 2024, the whole commune will produce 22 hectares of vegetables concentrated in the villages of Bac Binh, Sam Loc, Thuong Phu with fruit varieties such as green squash, hot pepper, tomato... Before Tet, people planted seedlings. Right after Tet, we stepped up propaganda so that farmers can take advantage of the sunny weather to stick to the fields for production."
According to farmers, before Tet, the long rainy and cold weather affected many vegetable growing areas. Meanwhile, the amount of green vegetables consumed during Tet was higher than usual, so the price of green vegetables was high. The high price of green vegetables from before Tet until now has become a driving force for farmers in Ha Tinh to increase production to meet market demand.
Mr. Nguyen Tien Giap - Thanh Sen Youth Cooperative harvests cucumbers for sale from the 3rd day of Tet
Since the third day of Tet, Thanh Nien Thanh Sen Cooperative (Ha Tinh City) has consumed an average of 200 kg of clean cucumbers and tomatoes per day. With a selling price of 30,000 VND/kg of tomatoes and 35,000 - 45,000 VND/kg of cucumbers, the unit earns about 7 million VND/day.
Mr. Nguyen Tien Giap - Thanh Nien Thanh Sen Cooperative said: "Our products are mainly imported into the clean agricultural product store system in the province. The price of the product is 10,000 - 20,000 VND/kg higher than similar products on the market, but it is still very well received by consumers because it is produced according to organic standards. At this time, we produce and consume as much as we can."
Ha Tinh farmers focus on spring vegetable production
According to Mr. Phan Van Huan - Head of the Cultivation Department - Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development), in the spring crop of 2024, the whole province planted 11,179 hectares of upland crops, including 5,845 hectares of vegetables of all kinds. Up to this point, localities across the province have "covered" 3,469 hectares of vegetables of all kinds. Currently, the weather has returned to good condition, so farmers across the province are focusing on production in the fields. In particular, green vegetables are consumed well and the high selling price is the motivation for farmers to actively stick to production in the fields. To take advantage of the season, the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection also directed localities to step up propaganda and guide people to focus on "closing" the production area according to the set plan.
