Works about Vietnamese people, with their worries and social complexities, are destined to win the Camera d'Or - an award for the best debut film by a young director, voted by one of the selection committees (Official Selection Committee or International Film Critics' Week). The work Inside The Yellow Cocoon Shell by Pham Thien An, with a duration of nearly 3 hours, about a man's journey of life perception from the city to the countryside, just won this award on the evening of May 27 in France.

International critics love the movie Inside the Golden Cocoon

Inside the Golden Cocoon tells the story of a man who must carry his sister-in-law's body back to her hometown to give to her brother. This journey brings out in him thoughts about the meaning of life, which foreign newspapers have described as "poetic" and "fascinating" to audiences.

Before Pham Thien An, 3 decades ago - in 1993 - director Tran Anh Hung won the Golden Camera award with the film The Scent of Green Papaya , which tells the story of a traditional woman's life with chaos at home and in the street.

The meeting point of these two Camera d'Or award-winning works is that they were both highly praised by Western film critics for their filming techniques, directing ability, and the themes they portrayed.

Also this time, Tran Anh Hung returned with the French film The Pot-Au-Feu , telling a story of love and cuisine but very provocative, he was "as formidable as ever" when he "won" the Best Director award - his first directing award at Cannes.

Filmmaker Tran Anh Hung wins Best Director award at Cannes 2023

Alongside Tran Anh Hung and Pham Thien An, Asian voices have also made a splash this year with some familiar names. Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda returned to Cannes with the thriller Monster , winning the Best Screenplay award. The award was presented to screenwriter Yuji Sakamoto, with director Hirokazu Kore-eda accepting the award on behalf of his colleagues.

In 2018, director Hirokazu Kore-eda won the Palme d'Or with the film Shoplifters - a work that "destroyed the emotions" of the audience when it exposed on the screen the naked images of a family of thieves in Japan, but through that, it partly showed a broader picture of contemporary Japanese society.

This time around, his film – written by Yuji Sakamoto – tackles a more thorny subject: school. It also won the Queer Palm, which honors films with explicitly gay themes.

Japanese actor Koji Yakusho wins Best Actor

Japanese acting legend Koji Yakusho won Best Actor for his performance in Wim Wenders' Perfect Days . In the film, he plays a sanitation worker who is content and happy with his life.

However, it is worth noting that all the winners of the above awards are men, not a single woman. And speaking of women in this season, director Justine Triet's victory marks the third female filmmaker to win the Palme d'Or in the long history of this award, following Julia Ducournau with Titane (2021) and Jane Campion with The Piano exactly 3 decades ago.
