Nguyen Van Thuyet: The keeper of Nam Dinh football's soul has passed away...

Mr. Nguyen Van Thuyet was born in 1955 in Nhan Chinh, Ly Nhan, Ha Nam province (formerly Ha Nam Minh province). During his lifetime, he was a marathon champion, participating in the Olympics twice (1980, 1988) and the Goodwill tournament once, before returning to Nam Dinh to start a career as a coach for the province's cross-country races, with 5 children who have made waves in cross-country running in Vietnam.

His daughter, Ms. Thanh Xuan, is the one who tied the hair of Nam Dinh Club Technical Director Nguyen Trung Kien. In fact, the fate with football was attached to Mr. Thuyet long before that. Mr. Trung Kien shared that since he was a young player, he knew the sound of Mr. Thuyet's drum on Chua Stadium in the years 1997 - 1998.

Not just stopping at watching football, the passionate love has urged Mr. Thuyet to do something for football in the South. After careful consideration, this special fan decided to equip a drum to more effectively fuel the team from the stands.

According to Mr. Thuyet himself, his drum is also very special, different from other drums as it weighs up to 30 kg, is 80 cm high and has a diameter of 65 cm. The leaders of Nam Dinh Department of Sports and Physical Training and Nam Dinh Club supported the construction cost.

Mr. Thuyet's drum sound is still mentioned in Thien Truong yard.

Since then, Nam Dinh FC's home matches have always become more exciting and lively when tens of thousands of fans here join in with the crisp drum beats of Mr. Thuyet. Many players shared that they received great resonance with the drum beat "tung, tung, tung, tung...", from which the nickname Thuyet "Drum" Nam Dinh fans know.

Endless love of football

Mr. Nguyen Trung Kien recalled: "Nam Dinh fans have known Mr. Thuyet Ong's drumming on Chua Cuoi Stadium, now Thien Truong Stadium, for about 30 years now. At first, he played the drum alone, with a very unique way of playing that could not be confused with anyone else's.

Mr. Thuyet is very passionate and enthusiastic, he is present in every match regardless of rain or shine. Not only Chua Cuoi Ngay and Thien Truong stadiums now, his drumbeats also proudly resound in all surrounding stadiums.

Even when Nam Dinh FC played as guests at SLNA's Vinh Stadium, Mr. Thuyet personally carried the drum by motorbike all the way to Nghe An to cheer. When it was time to return, the fans had to stop him from driving back himself, carrying the motorbike and drum onto the car for safety.

During his lifetime, football was in the blood of this special fan.

The reputation of this legendary fan is not only limited to Thanh Nam or neighboring provinces. His intense love for football is also evident at My Dinh National Stadium, in the matches of the Vietnam national team, with countless times the drumhead was torn because he played too hard.

To the point that the guards at My Dinh Stadium knew him well, instead of asking for tickets, they immediately went to help this fan carry the drum into My Dinh Stadium to cheer with the heroic "tung, tung, tung, tung..." drum beats.

Mr. Kien recalled: "When the Vietnamese team played at My Dinh Stadium, he would take his motorbike to Hanoi. Once, she tried to stop him, took away all the keys and money to keep him at home, but it still didn't work.

Taking out the spare key, without any money, he carried the drum to the gas station, filled the tank and drove to My Dinh to play. Every time he got to the stadium, he would shout and the security guard would open the door for him to carry the drum to the stands. Sometimes, he would just lock the motorbike and leave it there, asking his brothers to watch over it for him..."

After nearly 3 decades of persistently being attached to Nam Dinh football and Vietnamese football with a passionate football fire that has "soaked into his blood", for the past few years, Mr. Nguyen Van Thuyet's drumbeat has not sounded anymore due to health reasons. Today, an incurable disease has caused him to pass away forever, at the age of 71.

The funeral is scheduled to take place at 3:10 p.m. today, February 12, at his private residence (No. 1A, Lane 59, Tran Thanh Tong Street, Quang Trung Ward, Nam Dinh City). The funeral will begin at 4:30 p.m. on February 12.

The memorial service will be held at 6:30 a.m. and the funeral will be held at 7:05 a.m. on February 14. His body will be transferred to Hoan Vu Thanh Binh Vien crematorium (Ho bridge, Nam Dinh province). His remains will be buried in Vy Thuong village, Nhan Chinh, Ly Nhan, Ha Nam province.
