US and Ukraine about to sign mineral agreement?
Reuters reported that the United States and Ukraine are planning to sign a mineral exploitation agreement, which collapsed after a tense meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office on February 28.
Speaking before the US Congress on March 4 (US time), President Trump appreciated Mr. Zelensky's goodwill in signing a mineral agreement as well as his willingness to sit at the peace negotiating table with Russia. For his part, Mr. Zelensky expressed in a letter to Mr. Trump on March 4 that: "We truly appreciate what the US has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence. Regarding the mineral and security agreement, Ukraine is ready to sign at any time convenient for you."
It is not clear whether any of the mineral agreement's content has been changed.
Tri Do
President Trump said his priority was to "rescue" the US economy and working families, having inherited from his predecessor "an economic disaster and an inflationary nightmare".
According to The Guardian , after the Covid-19 pandemic, the US economy recovered the strongest in the world at the end of President Joe Biden's term, with the stock market booming, inflation falling and many jobs created. After Mr. Trump issued a tariff policy, the stock market fell sharply. The government also laid off a series of federal employees.
In his speech, Mr. Trump proposed to permanently set the tax cuts from his first term and pass a law to eliminate the tip and overtime tax. He announced that he would impose reciprocal taxes on US trading partners from April 2, and that this policy, although "may cause a little disruption", would bring prosperity, forcing companies to produce more in the US, creating jobs and opportunities. "Get ready for an incredible future because America's golden age has just begun," he concluded after speaking for 1 hour and 40 minutes, the longest of any US president's first speech to Congress.
Tension at the Capitol
In contrast to the enthusiastic cheers from the Republican lawmakers, Mr. Trump's speech faced an atmosphere of rare tension from the Democratic side. According to AFP, as soon as Mr. Trump entered the room, Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury held up a piece of paper with the words "this is not normal", causing a Republican politician to snatch it. A few minutes after Mr. Trump spoke, Congressman Al Green stood up and booed in protest, causing some angry Republicans to tell him to sit down. Mr. Green was escorted from the room after continuing to protest.
When Mr. Trump criticized his predecessor as “the worst president,” some Democrats whistled and protested. Furthermore, many Democrats wore pink shirts to protest policies that are disadvantageous to women. Some of these lawmakers even left the room during Mr. Trump’s speech.
In her rebuttal, Democratic Sen. Elissa Slotkin argued that Trump’s policies were raising prices and hurting the middle class. She also expressed sympathy for voters concerned about immigration and government waste, saying Trump’s approach to both was wrong.
In his speech to Congress, President Trump told the story of 13-year-old Devarjaye Daniel (DJ) who had cancer and "always dreamed of becoming a police officer." He said that in 2018, DJ was diagnosed with brain cancer and doctors said he had only five months to live.
However, DJ and his father pursued a plan to make his dream come true and DJ was sworn in as an honorary police officer several times. Attending Mr. Trump's speech, the boy was extremely surprised and happy when he directed the Director of the US Secret Service, Sean Curran, to make him a secret agent. In addition, Mr. Trump also surprised the boy Jason Hartley when he announced that he had been accepted to the US Military Academy at West Point as he wished to follow in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
