Reuters news agency quoted a source as saying that US President Donald Trump and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang discussed DeepSeek (a Chinese company whose AI model has recently shaken the technology world) and tightening the export of artificial intelligence (AI) chips during a meeting at the White House on the afternoon of January 31 local time.

President Trump did not provide details about the meeting, but called Mr. Jensen Huang a "gentleman." "We had a meeting. It was a good meeting," the US leader commented.

The meeting comes as the US government prepares to further restrict the export of AI chips this spring.

"We appreciated the opportunity to meet with President Trump and discuss semiconductor and AI policy. Mr. Jensen and the president discussed the importance of strengthening U.S. AI and technology leadership," an Nvidia spokesperson said in a statement.

Mr. Jensen Huang is a Taiwanese-American businessman. He co-founded Nvidia (USA) in 1993 and has served as chairman and CEO of the company since its inception.

The meeting between the US leader and Nvidia CEO was planned before DeepSeek shook the tech world, a source familiar with the matter said.

In recent days, DeepSeek - a Chinese AI startup founded just over a year ago - has shocked and amazed Silicon Valley after launching groundbreaking AI models that perform on par with many chatbots, but at a fraction of the cost.

Within days, DeepSeek became the most downloaded app on Apple’s App Store, raising concerns about America’s leadership in AI, wiping out about $1 trillion in value from U.S. stocks. At one point, shares of Nvidia, a leading maker of AI chips, fell 17%.

This comes despite strict US bans that prevent Chinese companies from accessing advanced chips - a key element for developing AI.

However, at least two US congressmen in the House of Representatives, John Moolenaar (Republican) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (Democrat), are calling on the Trump administration to consider restricting the export of AI chips produced by Nvidia.

They claim that the new AI model published by DeepSeek “extensively” uses Nvidia’s H20 chip, which is currently outside the scope of US export controls. The Trump administration is considering tightening restrictions on sales of Nvidia’s H20 chip designed for the Chinese market, according to three people familiar with the matter.
