The Hill newspaper reported on August 7 that former US President Donald Trump spoke out about the US team being eliminated from the 2023 Women's World Cup after losing to Sweden in the round of 16 match on August 6.
Writing on his social media platform Truth Social, he said the defending champions' "shocking and completely unexpected" loss was "absolutely symbolic of what is happening to our country" under President Joe Biden.
"Many of our players have been openly hostile to the United States. No other country behaves this way, or is even close. Wake up means lose. Great shot Megan," he wrote, taking aim at US star attacker Megan Rapione.
During the 2019 Women's World Cup, the 38-year-old announced that she would not go to the White House to celebrate if the U.S. won. She is a prominent voice in the fight for equal pay and conditions for female athletes, and is also an advocate for racial equality, gender equality, and the LGBTQ community.
At the time, Mr. Trump was still in office and said, "Megan should never disrespect our country, the White House, or our flag, especially since so much is on the line for her and the entire team."
"I'm a fan of the US team and women's soccer, but Megan should win first and then talk. Let's get this done," he added.
In this Women's World Cup, Sweden and the United States drew 0-0 after 120 minutes of play. In a dramatic penalty shootout, Sweden surprisingly won 5-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. Megan Rapinoe was one of three players for the United States to miss a penalty.
In 2022, President Biden awarded Megan the Presidential Medal of Freedom, making her the first soccer player to be awarded America's highest civilian honor.
