China's Ministry of Commerce criticized the US president's imposition of 10% tariffs on Beijing's goods as "disrupting normal trade between China and the US".
In a statement on February 2, China's Ministry of Commerce said Beijing would file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) and take "corresponding countermeasures to resolutely safeguard its own rights and interests."
"The US unilateral tariff increase seriously violates WTO rules," China's Ministry of Commerce accused, saying the move "not only fails to solve the US's own problems, but also disrupts normal economic and trade cooperation between China and the US." China said it was "strongly dissatisfied with this and resolutely opposed."
The statement came after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing a 10% tariff on Chinese imports to stop the flow of fentanyl, an addictive painkiller, into the US.
Along with China, the US also imposed a 25% tax on goods from two trading partners, Canada and Mexico. This tax will take effect from February 4.
"We urge the US to take an objective and rational approach to domestic issues, such as fentanyl, instead of resorting to threats of imposing tariffs on other countries," AFP news agency quoted China's statement.
China also "urges the US to correct its wrongdoings, face up to its problems, have candid dialogue with China, strengthen cooperation and manage differences on the basis of equality, mutual benefit and mutual respect."
Earlier, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also affirmed that she would respond to the US tax policy. Ms. Sheinbaum said she had asked the country's economy minister to "implement Plan B, which we have been implementing, including tariff and non-tariff measures to protect Mexico's interests."
Similarly, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has officially announced measures to respond to the new US tariff policy. Accordingly, Canada will impose a 25% tax on 155 billion Canadian dollars ($106.5 billion) worth of US goods, starting February 4.
Ottawa is also considering a number of non-tariff measures, including those related to critical minerals, energy procurement and other partnerships with the United States.
