On October 12, Mr. Steve Scalise, who was nominated by the Republicans who control the US House of Representatives, withdrew from the race for the position of Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
Speaking to the press, Mr. Steve Scalise said he would withdraw his candidacy for Speaker of the US House of Representatives after the Republicans in this legislative body failed to reach a consensus on electing him as Speaker of the House.
Earlier, in closed-door negotiations the same day, Republican congressmen in the US House of Representatives failed to narrow their differences to approve the nomination of Mr. Steve Scalise.
Congressman Steve Scalise, 58, representing Louisiana, is the second most influential Republican in the US House of Representatives. Although he was nominated, when put to the vote, he did not get the required 217 votes.
In a related development, the US House of Representatives has been without a leader for the past nine days after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was removed from office last week. The vote to elect a new Speaker to replace Mr. McCarthy was scheduled to take place on October 11 (US time), but was canceled.
