Environment and environmental pollution are global issues. All countries, regardless of their level of economic development, political and social regimes, are facing environmental pollution. However, with an ill-intentioned and anti-national perspective, hostile forces have put forward distorted views and tricks, claiming that environmental pollution only occurs in Vietnam, and have also falsely accused Vietnam of arresting and imprisoning environmental activists.

On September 28, 2023, Ms. Hoang Thi Minh Hong, born in 1972, was sentenced to 3 years in prison by the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City for tax evasion. In court, defendant Hoang Thi Minh Hong admitted to her crime and was very remorseful and regretful for her crime. Surprisingly, after Ms. Hoang Thi Minh Hong was arrested, websites such as RFA, VOA Vietnamese... continuously posted articles falsely accusing Vietnam of suppressing environmental activists. Even more absurdly, they also called on foreign organizations and countries to intervene, demanding that Vietnam release Hoang Thi Minh Hong.
Regarding this incident, the spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Pham Thu Hang, affirmed: “We completely reject the false information with bad intentions about Vietnam's crime prevention and control work as well as foreign relations. These are all cases of violations of Vietnamese law and have been investigated, prosecuted and tried in accordance with the provisions of Vietnamese law.”
Environment is a global issue, Vietnam as well as many other countries are making great efforts to minimize activities that cause environmental pollution. However, forces with bad intentions against Vietnam always find ways to dig up and deepen the limitations and shortcomings. Just a small incident related to discharge into the environment, or construction of works that pollute water sources... are immediately attributed and stereotyped as the nature of the political regime.
Many people also call for the establishment of groups and forums to discuss environmental issues in Vietnam, but in reality, they are there to incite and sabotage Vietnam. Major General Tran Kim Tuyen, former Director of the Department of Counter-Reactionary Prevention, Ministry of Public Security, said: "Regarding environmental protection forums, in my opinion, their purpose is not to protect the environment, but to take advantage of the issue of environmental protection to conduct activities that disrupt security and order."
Social media has become an effective tool for anti-Vietnam elements to use to exaggerate environmental issues in Vietnam, creating hot spots that attract public attention. In particular, under the direction of the reactionary organization Viet Tan, these elements continuously release news and images about environmental pollution activities in Vietnam. They create, cut, and manipulate information to make readers confused, bewildered, skeptical, and lose faith in the regime.

Recalling the environmental pollution incident that occurred in the Vung Ang Economic Zone caused by Formosa Company in 2016, hostile forces used the guise of democracy, human rights, and environment to incite people to gather in large numbers to illegally march, resist law enforcement officers, destroy property, and disturb public order. In particular, Hoang Duc Binh repeatedly used Facebook to live-stream images and words that slandered the authorities, inciting and distorting the truth. According to the investigation of the authorities, Hoang Duc Binh had participated in many reactionary groups, had relationships and connections with reactionary and opposing elements in the area, and regularly posted and shared on his personal Facebook information and propaganda documents that defamed the regime.
Associate Professor, Dr. Do Canh Thin, Deputy Director of the Institute of Non-Traditional Security, said that behind the tricks of hostile forces, there is not simply an environmental issue but the nurturing and carrying out of a color revolution in Vietnam, aiming to overthrow the political regime of Vietnam. “We know that hostile, reactionary forces do not like our regime. No matter how much we have achieved and how much social progress we have made, the subjects will never admit it. The second thing is that they take advantage of all events to exaggerate, cut and paste, distort and incite, including environmental issues, turning small into big, small into big, aiming to cause instability in Vietnam” - Associate Professor, Dr. Do Canh Thin said.
Vietnam is one of the countries that is greatly affected and impacted by climate change and the environment. Vietnam has also joined hands with the international community to make the earth greener. Many programs have been implemented such as planting 1 billion trees, reducing burning and CO2 emissions. At the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference held in December 2021, the Prime Minister of Vietnam committed to bringing net emissions to "0" by 2050 and committed to reducing global methane emissions by 2030, participating in the declaration on converting coal power to clean energy.
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong also affirmed: “We need sustainable development, in harmony with nature to ensure a clean living environment for present and future generations, not to exploit, appropriate resources, consume material goods without limit and destroy the environment”. Thus, Vietnam is always proactive and makes efforts to ensure a cleaner and friendlier living environment. At the same time, it always creates the best conditions for groups and individuals to participate in environmental protection activities. Any individuals and organizations that violate environmental laws will be dealt with fairly, strictly, and appropriately.
