Samsung - Vietnam's largest foreign investor: Growing with Vietnam

Over the years, Samsung has continuously invested capital to turn Vietnam into a global strategic base. This largest foreign investor in Vietnam has also made great efforts in training technology talents and supporting the development of Vietnamese enterprises, so that it can stand side by side with Vietnam on the road to prosperity.

Strategic stronghold

As the new year 2025 begins, Samsung Display has officially received an investment registration certificate to increase investment capital for its factory located in Yen Phong Industrial Park (Bac Ninh). This billion-dollar investment is an affirmation of Samsung's commitment to turning Vietnam into a strategic base worldwide.

Starting to invest heavily in Vietnam in 2008, initially with just a mobile phone factory in Bac Ninh, after nearly 17 years, Samsung now has 6 factories, a research and development (R&D) center and a sales entity in Vietnam. But more importantly, not just a production base, Vietnam has officially become a strategic base, taking on the dual production and R&D tasks of Samsung globally. And now, the strategic base of Vietnam is continuing to receive a "new mission".

It is worth remembering that in July 2024, during his visit to Korea, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received Samsung Group Chairman Lee Jae Yong. At this meeting, Chairman Lee Jae Yong said that Samsung plans to invest heavily in the next 3 years to make the factory in Vietnam the Group's largest display module production base globally.

Thus, just a short time after that meeting, Samsung began to realize this plan. With an investment of up to billions of USD, Samsung Display Vietnam will become Samsung's largest screen manufacturing facility in the world. And that also means that Vietnam is not only a mobile device manufacturing base, an R&D base, but also a base for manufacturing new generation screens for Samsung globally.

Along with activities to nurture the younger generation, with the philosophy of “co-prosperity”, Samsung's social responsibility activities have also been implemented to support Vietnamese enterprises to improve their competitiveness and expand their supply chains.

“In 36 years, since producing the first mobile phone in 1988, Samsung globally has produced about 6.3 billion products. Meanwhile, in just a short time, both factories in Bac Ninh and Thai Nguyen have achieved a total output of nearly 2 billion products,” a leader of Samsung Vietnam excitedly “boasted”.

In their stories, Samsung Vietnam leaders often cannot hide their pride in Samsung's rapid and strong development in Vietnam. Just over a decade ago, the Yen Binh Industrial Park (Thai Nguyen) was just tea fields, but now, it has grown to become the largest mobile phone manufacturing base in Vietnam. The same goes for Bac Ninh, nearly 20 years ago, the area around Yen Phong Industrial Park was still empty land. But now, the most modern factories have sprung up, making Vietnam Samsung's largest mobile device manufacturing base in the world. Currently, about 55% of Samsung's mobile devices are manufactured in Vietnam.

In addition to manufacturing mobile devices, Samsung Vietnam factories also produce all the important components to create a mobile phone, including the most core components, such as the metal phone case. Previously, Samsung Vietnam only produced 50%, but now it is responsible for producing all metal phones for Samsung globally. In addition, the FTG process - exclusive in Vietnam - also ensures the supply of all glass needs for Samsung products.

“Samsung's factories in Vietnam are the only 'all in one' factories in the world. We can take the initiative from the smallest components to finished product production in Vietnam. Only Samsung Vietnam can do this. Therefore, in 2022, it will only take us 3 months to completely produce the Samsung Galaxy S22 product,” said the leader of Samsung Vietnam.

Vietnamese intelligence in global brands

Samsung, on January 23, 2025, introduced the latest generation of the Galaxy S series to the market. For many years, Samsung Vietnam factories have always been assigned to produce the most high-end product lines, including the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip lines. The "production division" has also been carried out between the two factories. If SEVT is the "capital" of the Galaxy Z Flip, then Bac Ninh is the "capital" of the Galaxy Fold line.

As soon as they receive the “order” from Samsung Global, both SEV and SEVT factories will have to urgently prepare conditions to ensure the best production, on-time delivery and strict quality assurance of the new product line.

“Many years ago, Samsung Vietnam needed a lot of support from foreign experts. They came to our factories to transfer technology, product quality control processes and support the construction of production lines. But now, with the spirit of continuous learning, we have completely mastered advanced technology and applied it to mass production lines,” said Duong Ngoc Duy, Head of SEVT Production Department, adding that the parent corporation in Korea now completely trusts factories in Vietnam in producing the most advanced strategic product models.

And it's not just production, since the R&D Center was put into operation, the mark of Vietnamese engineers and production staff in a product with a global brand has become even greater.

Last year, Vietnamese engineers at the R&D Center made a special mark when they participated in the AI Project for the Galaxy S24 phone line, with one of the important features being live translation, translation assistant, and smart chat assistant. Although the R&D Center's engineers had previously participated in many global-scale projects, such as developing the SmartThings application, or testing projects for flagship phone models..., the AI project was a very special mark, a major turning point.

As Samsung increasingly focuses on developing AI in its product lines, even with the new Galaxy S series, Samsung calls it “the new chapter of mobile AI”, Vietnamese engineers will have more opportunities to contribute Vietnamese intelligence to cutting-edge technology products.

Vietnamese intelligence has contributed significantly to Samsung Vietnam's increasing success in investment, production and business activities, thereby making a great contribution to Vietnam's socio-economic development. Not only contributing greatly to exports, Samsung also contributes to economic restructuring, job creation and bringing Vietnam into the global value chain. In 2024 alone, the turnover of Samsung factories in Bac Ninh and Thai Nguyen reached over 58 billion USD, despite the impacts of the global market downturn.

Take care of your "second home"

Along with proud achievements in production and business activities, Samsung always attaches importance to corporate social responsibility (CRS) activities. Considering Vietnam as its "second home" and making efforts to "take care" of its home, Samsung has continuously maintained and developed both the scale of investment and the frequency of implementing CSR projects with a consistent vision: Together for Tomorrow, Enabling people. From training programs for future technology talents to humanitarian support activities for the community, Samsung has been realizing its commitment to accompany and develop sustainably with Vietnam.

Remembering the day Samsung organized the second Samsung CSR Day, Deputy Minister of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Van Hoi continuously expressed his appreciation for Samsung's efforts in implementing community projects in Vietnam.

“Hopefully, with its great potential, in the coming time, Samsung will continue to strengthen cooperation activities, truly becoming an important bridge in the good cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Korea,” said Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Hoi.

Samsung Vietnam leaders understand that, for Samsung, Vietnam is not only an investment market, but also a land that nurtures businesses, so Samsung has constantly made efforts to cultivate this land.

Efforts to build up with projects such as "Samsung Hope School", or support to promote the supporting industry in Vietnam. In particular, Samsung Hope School is one of the projects that has received a lot of love from the Vietnamese people. Because since the Samsung Hope Schools in Vietnam were built, up to now in 4 localities, in Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Bac Giang and Lang Son, more than 5,000 children in difficult circumstances have had the opportunity to access comprehensive education programs, to live and study in conditions of adequate facilities, safety and health. The next two schools in Binh Phuoc and Da Nang have also been and are in the process of implementation. There will be more Vietnamese children accessing educational opportunities, opening up a better future.

In addition, programs such as Voluntary Blood Donation, CSR Kiosk, support for flood victims, etc. have also been implemented by Samsung and tens of thousands of Samsung employees. By doing so, Samsung is realizing its commitment to accompany and develop sustainably with Vietnam.

Together with Vietnam to grow

Science, technology and innovation are considered the “golden key” for Vietnam to rise up. One of the top priorities is to rapidly develop high-quality human resources. For many years, Samsung has always made every effort to support Vietnam in training high-tech human resources.

Nguyen Ngoc Hung, one of the engineers participating in the AI project at Samsung's R&D Center, is one of those who received training support from Samsung. When he was a student at the University of Technology, Hung received a scholarship from Samsung. After graduating, Hung went to work at Samsung, and has been there for more than 10 years now.

Meanwhile, Le Hoang Tuan has also become one of thousands of engineers working at Samsung's R&D Center. In 2023, Le Hoang Tuan's WARRIOTS Team from Duy Tan University - Da Nang excelled in becoming one of the two winning teams of the Innovation Tech Challenge - 2023, within the framework of the Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) Technology Talent Development Project, which Samsung has been working hard to implement for many years.

According to Le Hoang Tuan, his passion for technology is gradually being realized thanks to Samsung's competitions and technology talent training courses. "SIC courses are systematically and flexibly designed, allowing learners to apply knowledge to create their own products. In addition, we are also trained in many soft skills throughout the learning process," Tuan shared.

Not only learning from courses and competitions, even when working at Samsung, Tuan continues to receive training to improve his skills. "I will continue to make constant efforts to turn my passion for technology into valuable products, contributing to the development of the Company," Tuan said.

Together with Tuan, since 2019, more than 12,000 students from 95 schools in 21 provinces and cities across the country have been trained and developed high-tech capacity through Samsung Vietnam's SIC Project.

As a global information technology education program for young people, SIC focuses on nurturing young talents by equipping them with core skills and problem-solving abilities, helping them develop sustainably in the future. The program provides in-depth courses on technology capacity development for young people aged 14 to 24, contributing to promoting the young generation of Vietnam to go further in the field of technology.

In addition to Samsung Innovation Campus, Samsung also implements many other activities to nurture the future generation. For example, the Solve for Tomorrow Competition is where students are encouraged to apply STEM knowledge to come up with practical solutions to social and local community issues. Or projects such as Training candidates for the WorldSkills Competition, and the School of Hope... All demonstrate Samsung's efforts to accompany the young generation of Vietnam on the path to building the future.

Along with the activities of nurturing the younger generation, with the philosophy of “co-prosperity”, Samsung’s social responsibility activities have also been implemented to support Vietnamese enterprises to improve their competitiveness and expand their supply chains. Starting from 2015, Samsung has implemented many programs to support Vietnam’s supporting industry.

To date, 379 Vietnamese enterprises have been supported to improve production, 406 productivity/quality consultants have completed training courses, 209 mold engineers have improved their skills, 123 smart factory consultants have completed training, and 72 enterprises have been supported to develop smart factories. Currently, the number of Vietnamese tier 1 and tier 2 suppliers in Samsung's global supply chain has increased from 25 enterprises in 2014 to 306 enterprises by the end of 2023...

Not only does it contribute directly to the socio-economy, but more importantly, it contributes to training and nurturing technological talents and supporting the advancement of Vietnamese enterprises. Samsung has brought Vietnamese boys and girls into its workshops, factories and, more importantly, R&D centers, giving them future opportunities. Samsung has also brought Vietnamese enterprises into its global supply chain, thereby making an important contribution to "improving the quality" of the Vietnamese economy. This is one of the important factors for Vietnam to be able to rise up and become rich. And that is also the way for Samsung and Vietnam to rise up...
