A TEARSHIP BREAKUP

On October 28, fans witnessed the emotional farewell of Vietnam's track and field queen Nguyen Thi Huyen. After winning the gold medal in her favorite event, the 400m hurdles, which was also her last competition at the 2023 National Track and Field Championships, Nguyen Thi Huyen and coach Vu Ngoc Loi cried. "This is my last top tournament as an athlete. I will switch to coaching. I want to have more time to take care of my family because after giving birth 5 years ago, I have returned to training and competing until now," Nguyen Thi Huyen shared.

Nguyen Thi Huyen can be proud of her brilliant achievements in her career.

The Vietnamese athletics icon sent special gratitude to his respected teacher: "I am someone who rarely expresses my feelings for my teacher, but at this moment of parting, I want to send my deepest thanks to him because without coach Vu Ngoc Loi, I would not have the career I have today. Over the past 15 years, he has been like a second father to me. I will always remember the times when he took care of me, boiled each pot of medicine for me to drink when I had a stomach ache."

Veteran and dedicated coach Vu Ngoc Loi shared: "We knew this day would come, but we couldn't hold back our emotions. For me, 15 years of working with Huyen have been filled with mixed memories of joy and sadness. I am proud that my student can now end her career at the peak of her career. I wish her success in the new chapter of her coaching career."

X APPEARS TO BE THE MONUMENT OF VIETNAMESE ATHLETES

Over the years, in the domestic arena, Nguyen Thi Huyen (Nam Dinh) has always affirmed her No. 1 position. At the SEA Games, she holds the record as the Vietnamese track and field athlete who has won the most gold medals in the regional arena with 13 gold medals. At the 28th SEA Games in 2015, she excellently scored a hat-trick of gold medals in the 400 m, 400 m hurdles, and 4 x 400 m events. At the 29th SEA Games in 2017, she successfully defended her 3 gold medals. Huyen also won 2 more gold medals at the 30th SEA Games in 2019, 2 gold medals at the 31st SEA Games in 2022, and at the 32nd SEA Games (May 2023), the last of her career, she shined with 3 gold medals.

In a larger arena, the Asian Championship, "mother of one" Nguyen Thi Huyen also excelled in winning 3 gold medals. Including 2 gold medals in the 400m hurdles, 4 x 400m relay in 2017 and 1 gold medal in the 4 x 400m relay in 2023 in Thailand. In addition, Huyen also had the honor of competing in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

DO THE EXTRAORDINARY

The most remarkable point in Nguyen Thi Huyen's career that makes experts admire her is her amazing comeback after giving birth.

Only 3 months after having her first daughter, Huyen returned to training with her husband as her coach, because at that time she was not allowed to join the national team. In October 2019, 10 months after giving birth, Huyen returned to compete in the Ho Chi Minh City International Athletics Tournament and won a double gold medal. Thanks to this achievement, she was called up to the Vietnamese athletics team to participate in the 30th SEA Games. Not only that, she also caused a shock when she won a double gold medal at this SEA Games, becoming a rare athlete who gave birth but did not interrupt the SEA Games and still won a gold medal. Former head of the Vietnamese athletics department of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training (now the Department of Sports and Physical Training) Duong Duc Thuy praised Nguyen Thi Huyen for doing something extraordinary for an athlete, unprecedented in Vietnam and rare in the world.

"When I returned after giving birth, I had great motivation because my husband and his family supported me and helped me take care of my child so that I could focus on training. When I went to training and competing, I missed my child so much that I could only open my phone to watch videos of my child and use that as motivation to strive. There are times when an athlete is lonely and terribly tired, but I always encourage myself not to give up. Now that I have switched to coaching, I will have more time to take care of and make up for my family. I also hope to pass on to my students the experience I have gained during 15 years of competing at the top level," Nguyen Thi Huyen shared.
