Why do many people often have bowel movements right after eating?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên07/02/2025

Many people have experienced the feeling of wanting to defecate immediately after a meal. This is a fairly common phenomenon but few people really understand the cause. This is not random but a natural reaction of the body.

When food enters the stomach, a series of complex mechanisms in the digestive system are activated. Food causes the stomach to expand, then the stomach sends signals to the brain via the vagus nerve, according to the health website Medical News Today (UK).

Wanting to defecate immediately after a meal is a natural phenomenon of the body.

The brain sends nerve signals to the large intestine. The large intestine, also known as the colon, is the last part of the digestive system and is mainly responsible for absorbing water, salt, and nutrients left over from food that has been absorbed in the small intestine.

When receiving nerve signals from the brain, the large intestine will expel the waste stored inside to prepare space for what is left that the small intestine has not absorbed. The result is stimulating the feeling of wanting to defecate. This phenomenon is called the gastrocolic reflex, also known as the postprandial reflex.

The gastrocolic reflex can occur at any time we eat, even during the meal, not necessarily after we have finished eating. However, a number of factors will influence this reflex, especially the type of food in the meal.

What foods affect the gastrocolic reflex?

Foods such as coffee, spicy foods, fatty foods, or foods high in fiber will trigger the gastrocolic reflex more quickly. Some people are particularly sensitive to these foods. In certain situations, such as eating out or at a party, they should avoid foods that trigger the gastrocolic reflex.

Additionally, certain health conditions can trigger the gastrocolic reflex. People with irritable bowel syndrome are more susceptible to the gastrocolic reflex. This is because irritable bowel syndrome causes food to move through the digestive tract more quickly. Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel disease, anxiety, and food allergies can also contribute to the gastrocolic reflex and cause bowel movements during or shortly after meals.

To reduce this condition, people with the condition need to avoid certain foods and also change their lifestyle and control their anxiety. If you have tried everything but it does not improve and your life is affected, you should see a doctor for a check-up, according to Medical News Today.
