In 2024, the Industry and Trade sector completed and exceeded all targets and tasks set out with many outstanding results, creating breakthroughs in the work of building and perfecting institutions and policies; major balances were ensured, especially energy security and balance of supply and demand of essential goods. Total export turnover reached a new record of nearly 800 billion USD (up 15% compared to 2023 and nearly 3 times higher than the assigned plan); the trade balance recorded the 9th consecutive year of high trade surplus, nearly 25 billion USD, helping to increase foreign exchange reserves, stabilize exchange rates and macroeconomic indicators.
Industrial production recovered strongly, growing by 8.4%, of which the manufacturing and processing industry increased by nearly 10%, creating a great driving force for macro-economic growth. Many localities have made efforts to overcome difficulties, restore production, and maintain a good industrial growth rate with an increased industrial production index (IIP). International economic integration has been implemented synchronously and effectively; opening up large potential markets in the Middle East and Africa.
The domestic market grew steadily at a rate of 9%. E-commerce exceeded the revenue mark of 25 billion USD (up 20% compared to 2023 and accounting for 2/3 of Vietnam's digital economic value). Trade promotion activities were strongly innovated with the largest series of events ever, the value of Vietnam's national brand exceeded the 500 billion USD mark, ranking 32nd in the world. The management of industrial clusters and national industrial promotion were implemented synchronously and effectively... In addition, the Industry and Trade sector proactively and resolutely implemented the "lean, compact, strong" apparatus arrangement in the spirit of Resolution 18 of the Central Committee. The Ministry proposed to reduce nearly 18% of the number of affiliated units and strongly streamline the operating apparatus from within.
Implementing the direction of the Government and the Prime Minister on determining the GDP growth scenario in 2025 at 8%, the Industry and Trade sector aims to strive for the industrial production index (IIP) to increase by about 9-10% compared to 2024; exports to increase by about 12% compared to 2024; total retail sales of goods and consumer services to increase by about 10% compared to 2024; total electricity production and import of the whole system is estimated at 347.5 billion kWh, an increase of about 12.2% compared to 2024.
Speaking at the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son said that in 2025, Vietnam aims for an economic growth of about 8% to create momentum for entering a new era, an era of national growth. Therefore, the industry and trade sector needs to promote its pioneering role in development, create an open environment, organize the implementation of newly issued mechanisms and policies, and continue to research and advise on new mechanisms and policies on energy development; deploy solutions to ensure energy security.
Continue to coordinate with ministries and branches in attracting investment. Ensure the supply of goods for domestic consumption, develop domestic trade to effectively exploit the domestic market, focus on promoting the development of e-commerce. In addition, continue to implement mechanisms and policies on international economic integration, especially the implementation of policies to attract FDI in the fields of industry and trade; focus on effectively exploiting FTAs that have come into effect and signed, expanding and diversifying markets, import and export goods, and supply chains.
