(Dan Tri) - Russia said on November 13 that the US opening a new missile base in Poland is part of an effort to contain Moscow by moving military infrastructure closer to its borders.

The US officially opened a new missile base in Redzikowo, northern Poland, on November 13. Construction of the base began in the 2000s in the town of Redzikowo near the Baltic coast.
Poland insists the new missile base is a symbol of the strong military alliance between the two countries regardless of who is in the White House.
The new US base at Redzikowo is part of a wider NATO missile shield called Aegis Ashore, which the alliance says is capable of intercepting short- to medium-range ballistic missiles.
In a statement on November 13, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said President Vladimir Putin had opposed plans to build the base since the 2000s, when George Bush was still US president.
The Russian leader, he said, at the time stressed that the US was lying when it said the aim was to intercept potential Iranian missiles.
"This is confirmation that President Putin was right. These plans are still being implemented. This is the advancement of the US military infrastructure on the territory of Europe towards our borders," spokesman Peskov said.
According to him, "this is nothing more than an attempt to curb our military potential and, of course, this leads to the adoption of appropriate measures to ensure equality."
However, Mr. Peskov did not specify what measures Russia might take in response.
