(Dan Tri) - Russia said it has not received a satisfactory proposal to start negotiations on Ukraine, after US President Donald Trump announced that Washington is making progress in talks to end the conflict in Ukraine.

"It is important that words are backed up by practical steps that take into account Russia's legitimate interests, demonstrate readiness to eliminate the root causes of the crisis and recognize the new reality," Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin told state news agency RIA Novosti on February 10.

"So far, we have not received any such proposals," he stressed.

There has been a series of conflicting or cautious messages from Washington and Moscow in recent days about possible talks between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin aimed at ending the three-year war between Russia and Ukraine.

Over the weekend, Mr. Trump said he had spoken by phone with Mr. Putin and hoped to have more conversations.

Asked whether he had a phone call with Putin before or after his inauguration on January 20, Trump said: "Yes. Let's just say I had a phone call. I look forward to having more conversations. I think I'll meet with Putin at the appropriate time." However, he declined to disclose the content of the call.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov refused to confirm the phone call between the two leaders.

"There are many different channels of communication. These communications take place through many different methods. And of course, among these many channels, there may be things that I personally do not know. So in this case, I can neither confirm nor deny," Mr. Peskov said.

Earlier, the Kremlin confirmed that there had been contacts between Russian and US officials to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

Russian Deputy Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that he is "always open to dialogue and ready to reach an agreement through negotiations, so the decision lies with Mr. Trump and his team."

Mr. Ryabkov emphasized that Washington needs to take the lead in improving relations between the two countries, emphasizing that building a foreign policy around "reaching an agreement with the White House at all costs" is a mistake.

During his campaign and after returning to the White House, Mr. Trump repeatedly vowed to quickly end the conflict in Ukraine. His team believes that both Russia and Ukraine need to make concessions to achieve peace.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is concerned that Kiev could be left out of the negotiations when Mr Trump talks with Mr Putin.

He hopes his proposed Victory Plan can serve as the basis for Mr Trump's plan to end the conflict.

"There can be no peace plan without Ukraine, I'm sure. Ideally, Mr. Trump's plan would include Europe," he said.

US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz said over the weekend that President Donald Trump is ready to end the conflict in Ukraine as quickly as possible, after which the main role in ensuring Ukraine's security will be transferred to European partners.
