Speaking to the media on December 26, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov emphasized that if the US is really serious, Washington must be the one to send the first signal.

"If the signals from the new US team to restore the dialogue, which has been interrupted since the special military operation in Ukraine, are serious, we will of course respond," Reuters quoted Mr. Lavrov as saying.
Earlier, speaking at the AmericaFest 2024 conference held on December 22, US President-elect Donald Trump expressed his determination to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war, and announced that he was waiting for negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The US President-elect also wanted to meet Mr. Putin as soon as possible.
Regarding Ukraine, Mr. Lavrov recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly expressed Moscow's openness to holding talks on resolving the conflict. Mr. Lavrov added that Russia hopes that Mr. Trump's team will "address the root causes of the conflict."
However, Russia's top diplomat noted that the country would only engage in talks if they were "meaningful" and took into account the underlying causes of the conflict and the principles outlined by President Putin earlier this year. In November, President Putin stressed that Russia was ready to discuss a ceasefire in Ukraine with Mr Trump, but ruled out any major territorial concessions and demanded that Kyiv abandon its ambitions to join NATO.
Lavrov said a ceasefire in Ukraine would lead nowhere. "We need final legal agreements that would address all the conditions for ensuring Russia's security and, of course, the legitimate security interests of neighboring countries," he said.
