Improving sustainability of construction projects in saline soils

Việt NamViệt Nam01/04/2025

Ca Mau Newspaper On the morning of April 1, 2025, the School of Interdisciplinary Sciences and Arts (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (KHCN) of the province organized a scientific workshop "Introducing anti-salinity technology for civil works and hardening of roadbeds on weak soil in Ca Mau province" under the provincial-level science and technology project: Research on solutions to improve the sustainability of construction works on saline soil in Ca Mau province.

Research topic on improving the sustainability of construction works in saline land in Ca Mau, chaired by the School of Interdisciplinary Sciences and Arts, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, implemented in Ca Mau province from December 2023 to December 2025.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Truc reported on research on salinity of construction works and solutions to improve the sustainability of construction works on saline land in Ca Mau province.

The report emphasized the need to study and apply specific solutions to protect construction works in saline areas in Ca Mau. Solutions to prevent salinity in construction works include: improving the quality of steel and concrete, protecting the surface of materials; using waterproofing protection layers, protecting the surface of steel; installing physical moisture-proof layers, using materials such as asphalt felt, polyethylene sheets, metal sheets; installing drainage systems, creating effective drainage systems to reduce the effects of salinity; combining loose materials under the foundation to prevent capillary flow... In addition, the workshop also listened to the sharing of new technological solutions for civil and industrial works against salinity; techniques for hardening roadbeds; and a report on Technology and techniques for preventing salinity in low-rise housing.

Delegates contribute opinions at the workshop.

Representatives of the departments and branches attending the workshop said that the research topic is very necessary for the current situation in Ca Mau province. Because salinity affects construction works in many ways, reducing the life of the works and increasing maintenance costs. Therefore, the locality wants to have a certain time to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the works, as a basis for assessing long-term sustainability. It is necessary to focus on researching solutions to improve the quality of rural traffic works, especially in areas with weak soil, susceptible to landslides and subsidence; propose to test a rural road section using new techniques from the project to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of the works...

Mr. Thai Truong Giang, Deputy Director of the Provincial Department of Science and Technology, contributed comments at the workshop.

Nguyen Tan Nghin, Deputy Head of the Economic, Infrastructure and Urban Department of Dam Doi, hopes that the Project will focus on in-depth research on solutions to improve the quality of rural traffic works, especially in areas with weak soil, susceptible to landslides and subsidence.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Truc, Head of the Ca Mau region project, acknowledged and highly appreciated the frank spirit of contribution to help the Council make adjustments to suit the actual conditions in the locality. Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Truc said: “With the typical conditions of weak and saline soil, Ca Mau has a heavy burden of rural transport development costs and the life of the works is also shorter than other provinces and cities in the region. As scientists, we hope to find solutions in the construction and development of rural transport systems, civil works, and housing in new ways, with new techniques, meeting the criteria: easy to implement, good technical efficiency, reasonable price... Thereby, contributing to promoting trade development, improving the lives of people in the Ca Mau region in particular and the Mekong Delta in general.
