(Dan Tri) - Kieng Minh Nghia - a Tay male student in Lang Son - is one of the excellent students who won the 2023 Odon Vallet scholarship, a scholarship fund sponsored by a French billionaire.
Kieng Minh Nghia was born into a Tay family in Van Thuy, Chi Lang, Lang Son. He is a 12th grade student at Lang Son Provincial Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities.

Right from grade 10, the Tay boy showed his outstanding learning ability when he won third prize in the 12th grade biology competition for excellent students at the school level. With this achievement, Minh Nghia was selected to join the provincial excellent student team, competing with his 12th grade classmates and winning the consolation prize.
Grade 11, Minh Nghia broke through with second prize in the provincial excellent student competition, surpassing grade 12.
This year, as a 12th grader, Minh Nghia entered his name on the official list of the National Biology Team of Lang Son province.
Minh Nghia confided that one of the strong motivations that makes him strive in his studies is his family circumstances.
Like most farming families in the poor countryside of Lang Son, Minh Nghia's parents do not have the financial means. Minh Nghia is determined to pass the entrance exam to the provincial boarding school for ethnic minorities, with the government providing all of his tuition and living expenses to reduce the financial burden on his parents.
Dan Tri reporter had a conversation with Tay male student Kieng Minh Nghia.
Study every day from early morning to late night
Pursuing biology since grade 10, what is it about this subject that attracts you?
- At first, I came to biology because a friend who motivated me to study also chose this subject. I found biology more and more interesting. It helped me find answers to the "why" questions that I often thought about.
Biology is interesting but also very difficult. To get your name on the list of national excellent students in biology, how much time do you spend on it every day?
- Probably full time. I study at school all day from Monday to Saturday. In the evening, I study online with teachers or study by myself. But I am not the only one with such a tight schedule. Most of my classmates study 14-15 hours a day.
The only difference is that I focus on studying one subject for the national excellent student exam, while my friends study many subjects for the high school graduation exam to get into university.
What do you usually do to relax after stressful hours of study?
- Like you guys, I play games for entertainment. Besides, I like reading novels.
What is your university goal and major?
- I plan to pursue a medical career and apply to the Military Medical Academy. I hope to get into this school because there is no tuition fee, so my parents won't have to worry about raising me.

I also hope to return to my hometown to work in order to live near my parents and contribute to my hometown. I know that becoming a doctor is not easy, not to mention the profession chooses people. However, I will try my best to make this dream come true.
If I had money, I would open a restaurant for the poor.
As a Tay person, what makes you wonder about your community?
- The place where I was born and raised is a harmonious community of many ethnic groups, not just the Tay people. What worries me is that the learning conditions in my hometown are still lacking. Many children going to secondary school have to cycle dozens of kilometers to get to school.
I myself have gone through years of schooling like that so I understand the hardship and difficulty of acquiring knowledge.
I hope that schools in the highlands will receive more investment and build boarding and semi-boarding areas so that children can save on commuting.
Imagine the future in 5 years, what do you think you will be like and what will you do to help the community?
- I am still a student, there are many near-term goals to conquer so I don't dare to think too far. However, if I imagine something good in the future, it would probably be the desire to study abroad. And if I had money, I would open a charity restaurant. Only with food can one practice religion.
Who is your idol?
- I don't admire or idolize anyone. I just want to do what I like.
Thanks Minh Nghia for this conversation!
