Reuters quoted a Pentagon statement saying that on October 23, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin had a phone call with his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant about the situation in Gaza and the current conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Pentagon chief expressed deep concern over reports of attacks on the Lebanese Armed Forces. He called on Israel to take steps to "ensure the safety and security of Lebanese troops and UN peacekeepers."

The Lebanese army said over the weekend that three of its soldiers were killed when Israel struck a Lebanese military vehicle in the south. Israel apologized and said it was not targeting the Lebanese army. According to media reports, Israel mistakenly shot a Lebanese tank while trying to target Hezbollah fighters.

Meanwhile, the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon has also been attacked by Israel several times. However, Israel has denied it.

In addition to the situation in Lebanon, during yesterday's phone call, Minister Austin and his Israeli counterpart also discussed the crisis in Gaza.

Secretary Austin said Washington welcomed humanitarian assistance activities through the Erez border crossing into the northern Gaza Strip, and urged Israel to resolve the humanitarian situation there.

Last week, Washington sent a letter to Israeli officials, asking Israel to take specific measures to resolve the crisis in Gaza, otherwise Washington would be forced to cut military aid to Tel Aviv.
