Mr. Adel Jumaa, Minister of Cabinet Affairs of the Libyan government, was injured in an assassination attempt on the streets of the capital Tripoli today (February 12).
Security forces stand guard outside the residence of Prime Minister GNU Abdulhamid Dbeibah on January 7.
Reuters quoted a statement from Libya's Government of National Unity (GNU) condemning the attack by a group of unidentified gunmen targeting Minister Jumaa.
According to GNU, the group opened fire directly at the minister's vehicle while it was traveling on a highway.
The Libya Observer newspaper and Anadolu news agency both cited sources as saying the minister was injured in the leg. Mr Jumaa was rushed to hospital for surgery and is now in stable condition.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack while authorities have launched an investigation to find the culprits behind the assassination plot.
The GNU under the leadership of Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah was established in 2021 through a UN-backed process.
Minister Jumaa has been overseeing coordination between Prime Minister Dbeibah's office and other GNU ministries since March 2021. He is considered one of Prime Minister Dbeibah's closest advisers.
