(CLO) US President Donald Trump has proposed a joint meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, declaring that he wants all countries to move towards denuclearization.
On Thursday, Mr. Trump told reporters that he planned to move forward with those denuclearization talks after “we get things done” in the Middle East and Ukraine. The comments came as the United States, Russia and Ukraine are actively pursuing talks to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
"There's no reason for us to build brand new nuclear weapons, we already have so many," Trump said at the White House on Thursday. "You could destroy the world 50 times, 100 times. And here we are building new nuclear weapons, and they're building nuclear weapons."

“We’re all spending a lot of money that could be used for other things that are actually much more productive,” he said. The United States is expected to spend about $756 billion on nuclear weapons between 2023 and 2032, according to a 2023 report by the Congressional Budget Office.
In addition, the US president said he is aiming to schedule meetings with Xi Jinping and Putin early in his second term and ask countries to cut their military budgets in half. Mr. Trump said he believes "we can do it."
According to the US Department of Energy, as of September 2023, the country maintained 3,748 nuclear warheads, down from a stockpile of 22,217 nuclear warheads in 1989. The agency reported that the US had a maximum of 31,255 nuclear warheads in 1966.
Meanwhile, according to the Federation of American Scientists, Russia is estimated to have a nuclear arsenal of about 4,380 warheads, while China has an arsenal of about 600 warheads.
