US announces weapon that can intercept IRBM Oreshnik

Russia's Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile can only be intercepted by the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) missile defense system. This is the only US weapon that can intercept Russia's medium-range ballistic missiles. This was stated by journalist Brandon Weichert of The National Interest magazine.

At the same time, the author emphasized that THAAD “does not guarantee” the ability to intercept 100% of new missiles.

The US THAAD complex consists of 6 self-propelled launchers, each carrying 8 interceptor missiles, a radar and fire control and communication equipment. This system allows you to intercept targets not only on the outskirts of the atmosphere, but also in outer space.

In late November 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of mass production of the Oreshnik. The Russian leader also noted that some missiles had already been put into combat readiness.

Australia launches Tomahawk missiles from ships for the first time

Russia's RIA Novosti news agency reported that Australia launched Tomahawk missiles provided by the US for the first time.

After the rocket launch, Australia became the third country after the US and UK to carry out this activity.

In March 2024, the Associated Press reported that the US supported the sale of Tomahawk missiles to Australia as part of the AUKUS defense partnership.

At the time, Canberra said it planned to buy up to 220 cruise missiles at a cost of about $900 million. The US government said last year it would sell up to 200 Block V variants and 20 Block IV variants to allies.

The introduction of the Tomahawk missile could significantly change the operational range of the Australian Armed Forces and Royal Australian Navy, as the maximum attack range has increased from 124 km (for the older AGM-84 Harpoon missile) to 1,650 km (for the more advanced RGM-109E Tomahawk Block IV missile).

The Tomahawk cruise missile, capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads, would significantly enhance the country's combat capabilities in the event of a regional conflict.

The US Navy began developing a sea-launched cruise missile in 1972. The Tomahawk is designed to fly at subsonic speeds while remaining low in altitude, making it difficult for radar to detect. The Tomahawk uses specially designed guidance systems to maneuver at such low altitudes.

Notably, Tomahawk can be launched from more than 140 US Navy surface ships and submarines, including four modified Ohio-class submarines, as well as the Royal Navy's Astute, Swiftsure and Trafalgar-class submarines.

South Korean Navy puts into service new Aegis-class destroyer

According to the military news site Defense News, the South Korean Navy has just put into service the new destroyer Jeongjo the Great equipped with the modern Aegis ship-based missile defense system.

The 8,200-ton ship was built by Hyundai Heavy Industries and designed to help Seoul neutralize threats from North Korea. Jeongjo the Great becomes the largest surface warship ever built by South Korea.

The Jeongjo the Great's armament includes surface-to-surface missiles and anti-aircraft missiles, including the SM-3 and SM-6. The ship is also equipped with a modern hydroacoustic sonar system for anti-submarine missions.

The second destroyer of the same class is expected to be delivered to the Navy in 2026, the third in 2027. Jeongjo the Great will enter combat service in late 2025.

US explains the failure of Abrams tanks in Ukraine

According to The National Interest magazine, the US Abrams tank disaster in Ukraine has only just begun.

“The Abrams tank, once the backbone of America’s technical and military might, is now failing on the battlefield in Ukraine. Are the Ukrainians to blame? The tank itself? Or something in between?”, The National Interest wrote.

The M1A1 Abrams tank, considered by many experts to be the best in the world, was completely destroyed by the Russian side. Of the 31 Abrams tanks provided by the US to the Ukrainian side, 20 were shot down on the battlefield.

The Ukrainian army prefers to use Soviet T-64 and T-80 tanks instead of American tanks, because battlefield practice has shown that American tanks are poorly protected. The author notes that Ukraine's preparation for receiving Western equipment is incomplete and patchy.

Earlier, the director of the industrial complex of weapons, ammunition and special chemicals of the state corporation Rostec, Bekhan Ozdoev, in an interview with the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper, emphasized that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have begun to equip Leopard and Abrams tanks with Soviet Kontakt-1 explosive reactive armor.
