(CLO) The latest research from Cambridge University has revealed an alarming truth: AI is not just a support tool but also has the ability to manipulate our thoughts, turning us into puppets in a technological play.
Researchers have coined a new concept called the “intention economy.” In this economy, companies can collect and analyze huge amounts of data about our behavior, preferences, and habits to predict what we will do next.
They can then sell this information to other businesses who want to target their advertising to us more precisely.

For example, let's say you're looking for a new phone. AI will track your online behavior, the keywords you search for, and even your conversations to better understand your needs. Phone companies can then use this information to show you ads about phones that are best suited for you.
“If left unchecked, the intention economy could become a tool for manipulating our decisions,” warns Dr Jonnie Penn, a historian of technology at the University of Cambridge. “Companies could use AI to make us buy products we don’t need, or even influence our voting decisions.”
The authors also said that an AI model would navigate conversations to serve advertisers, businesses, and other third parties. Advertisers would be able to use the AI-generated tools to create customized online ads.
The report cites the example of an AI model created by Meta, called Cicero, that achieved “human-level” ability to play the board game Diplomacy — a game that the authors say depends on inferring and predicting the intentions of opponents.
Leading experts in the technology field have warned about the ability of AI to predict and influence human behavior.
Specifically, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang shared a notable view in a speech last year. He argued that advanced AI models will be able to "figure out what your intentions are, what your desires are, what you're trying to do, and present information to you in the best possible way."
