According to IGN , Take-Two Interactive announced its acquisition of Zynga in 2022, but Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently revealed that Microsoft had wanted to buy the mobile gaming giant before that.

At the recent Microsoft-FTC trial, Spencer spoke about the difficulties in the mobile gaming business, revealing that Xbox "has no strategy to win in mobile gaming." He asserted that mobile gamers don't want the Xbox experience, and the Xbox community hasn't asked for their console experience to be brought to mobile.

Microsoft once wanted to own Zynga

Notably, Spencer revealed that Microsoft tried to buy Zynga to solve that dilemma, but the developer was snapped up by Take-Two for $12.7 billion, which at the time was the largest acquisition of a gaming company in history. Microsoft's consideration of buying Zynga dates back to 2010, when the Xbox business was run by Don Mattrick.

Spencer admitted that Microsoft spent "quite a bit of time" working on the Zynga deal, but it turns out the company's ambitions were even bigger, wanting to make a huge deal to help boost its mobile division.

Accordingly, in November 2021, Microsoft's attention gradually shifted to Activision Blizzard, and this nearly $ 70 billion deal between the two companies is still facing many problems to this day. Spencer also said that Activision is a major mobile content publisher thanks to its existing brands such as Candy Crush .
