Recently, coach Deschamps decided to give the captaincy of the French team to Mbappe. The 24-year-old player replaces goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who retired from the national team after the 2022 World Cup .

Explaining the reason for giving Mbappe such a great responsibility, coach Deschamps emphasized: "It is natural and reasonable for Mbappe to be given the captain's armband. He also desires to take on this responsibility."
However, immediately after Mbappe took on the role of captain, Griezmann expressed disappointment. Le Figaro newspaper emphasized: "Griezmann was sad and hurt when coach Deschamps gave the captain's armband to Mbappe. This player is considering his future in the French team."
Afterwards, coach Deschamps also explained Griezmann's situation. He shared: "He knows he has the ability to become captain. I have talked to Griezmann. Anyway, giving the captain's armband to Mbappe does not mean taking away Griezmann's opportunity."

There are many conflicting opinions on this issue. Former football star Robert Pires does not support Deschamps' decision because he thinks it is disrespectful to Griezmann.
Pires shared: "I don't think it's a reasonable choice. Considering his age and level of dedication, Griezmann deserves this responsibility more. I'm very surprised by Deschamps' decision. I find this move disrespectful to Griezmann. I emphasize that I have no intention of going against Mbappe."
However, there are many opinions supporting Mbappe. Center-back Ibrahima Konate said: "I am satisfied with the head coach's choice. Mbappe deserves this responsibility after what he showed at the World Cup and PSG. Both on and off the field, he is a talented leader. Many people also agree with the coach's choice. Some people think Mbappe is arrogant, but to me, he is a good person."
According to L'Equipe, Mbappe will meet Griezmann to discuss the captaincy. The PSG player seems to know that his teammate is disappointed. Mbappe hopes that the conversation between the two can turn things around. The 1998-born star also confirmed that he has no intention of monopolizing the captaincy.
