For the past 4 days, Mr. Hoang Van Thoi, 32 years old, the only survivor of a family of 6 in Lang Nu, has been unable to eat or sleep to search for his relatives. This man only hopes to find his youngest child to bury.
Sitting absent-mindedly in the cultural house of Lang Nu village (Phuc Khanh commune, Bao Yen district) - where Lao Cai province established a search and rescue command board, Mr. Hoang Van Thoi seemed indifferent to the activities taking place before his eyes.

The small, dark-skinned man seemed to have lost a lot of weight after the great shock. For the past 5 days, he has not been able to eat or drink anything, even though he has been running everywhere, following rescue teams in the hope of finding all his family members. On the evening of September 9, a landslide occurred behind his house due to prolonged heavy rain. The village chief advised him to move his family to a safer place. Thoi took his 5 relatives, including his mother, wife and children, to his sister-in-law's house to temporarily take shelter to avoid the landslide, while he continued to look after the house.
Mr. Thoi could not have imagined that the meal on September 9 would be the last meal he would have with his wife and children. At around 5:30 a.m. on September 10, he heard a very heavy rain, then a very loud explosion, water and rocks from the hill fell down, he wanted to run to his sister-in-law's house to find his mother and wife and children but it was too late. Until now, this man still blames himself for not being able to save his family with his own hands... "The water and rocks slid down very quickly, there was nothing he could do," Mr. Thoi said. After the incident, he and the survivors in the commune, along with rescue forces, searched everywhere. After 3 days of searching, the bodies of his mother, then his wife and 3 older children were found, but the youngest child was still missing. He had to personally say goodbye and bury his mother, wife and children. "My mother, my wife and children are all gone. The house is gone. I have nothing left, I just want to find my youngest child to bury," Mr. Thoi said with tears in his eyes.
Proposal for resettlement for people of Lang Nu
With red eyes, Mrs. Hoang Thi Bong (47 years old) said that she and her children went to work in Yen Bai City to pay off the debt for building a house, her husband stayed in Lang Nu to farm. After many years of saving and borrowing, she and her husband were able to build a new house to live in. But not long after, the flood swept away everything, from the newly built house to her husband. Shocked by the bad news, she and her children rushed back to Lang Nu, but to this day, her husband's body has not been found.
