Man Utd's board of directors has just made an official announcement about the dismissal of coach Erik Ten Hag. The Dutch coach will end his term earlier than his contract, following Man Utd's consecutive poor results.
Ten Hag's contract actually expires in June 2026, or about 21 months. Ten Hag earns £9 million a year as manager of Man Utd. According to calculations by The Athletic, the Old Trafford team must compensate Ten Hag with up to £16 million (about 530 billion VND) for firing him in the middle of the season.
This is the second highest compensation amount in Man Utd's history. This record belongs to coach Jose Mourinho. In 2018, after firing Mourinho, the Red Devils had to compensate him and his assistants a total of 19.6 million pounds (650 billion VND). In 2016, Man Utd also paid 8.4 million pounds (277 billion VND) in contract compensation for firing coach Louis Van Gaal.
If the compensation from the three cases mentioned above is added together, Man Utd would have to pay 44 million pounds for firing a coach against the contract. This amount is enough for Man Utd's board of directors to buy a team in the English First Division.
Ten Hag pocketed £16m after leaving Man Utd.
Under coach Ten Hag, Man Utd won 2 titles: Carabao Cup (2023) and FA Cup (2024). However, the players' performances have clearly declined after each season. The players brought in by Ten Hag rarely show their true value, while key players such as Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot or Lisandro Martinez have played inconsistently.
In addition to professional issues, Ten Hag's management style is also not popular with his students. He has repeatedly publicly clashed with Man Utd players, leading to the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho. When Rashford's form has declined, Ten Hag has not hesitated to criticize him in front of the press. This partly explains Rashford's poor stats in the last two seasons.
After the draw with Aston Villa on October 6, Ten Hag was very confident in his ability to stay at the club. However, before October had even ended, the Dutch coach was fired.
"We always communicate, communicate every week. We have the same vision. We know what we are doing, this is a long-term project and progress is important," Ten Hag said on October 6.
Ten Hag's project will be continued by interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, while Man Utd search for a new manager. Xavi and Thomas Frank are the two strong candidates for this position at Old Trafford.
